Then, clapping their hands, their faces became haggard and their complexions turned blue. Exhausted by grief, they wailed. Then, the gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, along with their retinues, mourning and wailing, went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they fell to the ground like felled trees. Some prostrated at the Blessed One's feet, some uttered loud cries of grief, some cried out and rolled on the ground, and some knelt before the Blessed One, raising their hands to the sky, saying: Alas, Buddha! Alas, Buddha! Alas, Protector! Alas, Compassionate One, who cherishes and protects all beings! Alas, refuge and support of the three realms, who grants eyes to all beings! Alas, who is the refuge of the helpless! The world will be destroyed! All beings will be blinded! The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha will disappear! Thus they wailed, and holding each other's hands, they wailed with cries of compassion like the wails of the undead. They wailed like those who mourn the death of a father, the death of a brother, or the death of a son. Alas, Protector! Alas, Spiritual Friend! Alas, speaker of sweet and gentle words! Alas, possessor of the strength of a lion, an elephant, and a bull king! Alas, teacher who reveals the state of nectar! Thus they wailed in many different ways. Some went into the sky and struck themselves, then fell to the ground, rolling on the ground, wailing sorrowfully from the depths of their hearts. Then, the venerable Ananda fainted and fell to the ground like a felled tree. When he regained consciousness, he placed his hands on the ground before the Blessed One, looked at the Blessed One's face, and at that time spoke these verses: Beings are extremely miserable! Weeping and wailing, Seeing them tormented by the pain of sorrow, My borrowed evil karma increases again.

Alas! How in the ruins of that monastery, destroyed by robbers, a great heap of flames, appearing before my eyes, seeing flames everywhere, they fled in terror, with no refuge, as if without support. Likewise, many sentient beings, hearing the news of the Buddha's Nirvana, without refuge, suffering greatly, tormented by the arrows of sorrow. If the teacher has passed away, how shall I behold the Buddha? Others will eventually pass into Nirvana, I pray that the Blessed One remain for an eon! Just as a flame burns, tongues of fire dance, fuel exhausted, completely extinguished, having attained perfect enlightenment in the land of the giants, how shall I face Nirvana? In the garden of the Buddha's light, from now on I will never see again, in the victory garden of the guide, I will never see the Dharma being taught. That king among men has passed away, having entered the noble city of the Licchavis, how shall I speak to the Licchavis? The teacher has passed away, having arrived at the noble city of the Shakyas, Kapilavastu, how shall I speak this unpleasant news? The great sage has passed into peace, to the people of Magadha, and to the noble city of King Ajatashatru, how shall I express it in words? The Shakya Lion has passed away, tens of thousands of beings, repeatedly uttering cries of sorrow, how shall I respond? The Shakya Lion has passed away, the monks, the nuns, and the laypeople, how shall I rejoice, king among men? The supreme sage, for us who uphold vows, all happiness, king among men, the place of giving, where has the perfect Buddha gone? If someone asks, how shall I answer? If the gods and nagas ask, whether the sage has entered into great meditation, or gone to the place of walking, how shall I fearlessly answer? For whom shall I repeatedly prepare the lion's bed? Hero, for whom shall I prepare the lion's throne in the future? To the retinue like a lion, fearlessly proclaiming, the profound and difficult to see Dharma, to whom shall I listen? The teacher has passed away, to whose feet shall I offer pure water, whose Dharma robe shall I offer? Whose alms bowl should I take? Among the best of men, in the midst of the Sangha, Who will praise me? Called Ananda, Who will attend to me in the future? Whose knowledge and courage are boundless, Whose speech is gentle and pleasing, Who creates supreme joy, To whom shall I listen directly? The son of the Victorious One, the holder of the Dharma, Having uttered all such lamentations, At the feet of the Great Sage, He fainted and fell to the ground. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable Ananda: Son of Gautama, from the very beginning I have told you, Ananda, that all that is lovely and pleasing is not permanent, have I not shown you that truth? Son of Gautama, all conditioned things are like a dream, like an illusion, like a mirage, like a dewdrop, and are deceptive. All conditioned things are impermanent, son of Gautama, do not grieve or lament. Son of Gautama, the Tathagata will, in the last watch of this night, pass into complete Nirvana with the complete Nirvana that transcends all limits, and the complete Nirvana that utterly destroys all bonds, and the complete Nirvana that is unequal and equal. Son of Gautama, go and prepare a lion's bed for the Tathagata between the two sala trees, with the head facing east, the face facing north, and the back facing south, lying on the right side. Then, the venerable Ananda, at that time, weeping and grieving, lamenting and wailing, with tears filling his eyes, weeping and with tears streaming down his face, prepared the Blessed One's lion's bed between the two sala trees. Then, the venerable Ananda, having prepared the Blessed One's lion's bed, at that time spoke these verses: The Great Sage's lion's bed, Is the last preparation today, The lion's bed of the best of men, Will not be prepared again. The best of men has passed into Nirvana, The protector of the world has passed away, The beautiful sala grove is empty, How shall I look upon it here? Who once in the sala grove, Long did abide
