Today he passes into nirvana. He removes suffering, is without sin, and without affliction. He is the holy healer, the great physician. Who is the supreme remover of the suffering of non-virtue? That capable one, he passes into nirvana today. He who saw beings overcome by attachment and hatred, subdued by ignorance, clinging to old age and death, entering obstructed, contrary, and wrong paths, then generated compassion for the world and taught the Dharma. He whose demon hosts were of extremely fierce and violent forms, possessing various forms, holding firm weapons and vajras, some displaying various terrors, others standing holding various rocks. Though seeing such hosts of various violent forms, he did not waver or move. That protector of the world who subdued the hosts of demons, he passes into nirvana today in the grove of sala trees. He who greatly extended his right hand and shook the peak of Mount Meru together with its cities, the guide, the righteous one, who possessed all the Dharma, will pass into nirvana in the grove of sala trees. He whose striking sound resounded immeasurably in the ten directions, who had gone beyond the shore of knowledge, that teacher, the essence of beings, passes into nirvana today in the grove of sala trees. He who frightened the powerful hosts, attained the unmoving, sorrowless, unconditioned state, turned the wheel of Dharma for the benefit of beings, and the capable one well taught the four noble truths. He whose miracles are inconceivable, who arranged the fields in the space of a hair's tip, who had no conception of self in his body, that protector passes into nirvana today. The teacher went to the land of the Kushinagari, entered the nearby grove, and having placed himself in peaceful meditation, he will pass into nirvana like a fire that has consumed its fuel. As soon as the venerable Ashvaghosa had spoken these verses, then, by the power of the Buddha, among the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen in Jambudvipa, except for the great elder Mahakashyapa and his retinue, and also except for two hundred and twenty-four monks, the other fourfold assembly prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, thinking that this was the last time they would look upon the Blessed One, in the grove of sala trees near the Kushinagaris.

I went to the garden there. The venerable Unobstructed immediately spoke those verses, and from then on, at that time, in the three-thousand-great-thousand world realm, gods with clairvoyance, goddesses, nagas, old naga males, naga females, yakshas, young yakshas, yaksha females, rakshasas, old rakshasas, young rakshasas, young rakshasa females, asuras among beings, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, and countless stars, all of them were filled with tears, weeping sorrowfully, uttering wails, uttering sobs, lamenting again and again. They were suffering, unhappy, tormented by the sting of sorrow, raising their hands to the sky, uttering sobs. Some were weeping with their hands clasped. Some were leaning their heads together, looking at each other's faces and weeping. Some were opening their mouths, uttering faint sounds, uttering wails, losing their senses, the radiance of their faces becoming dim, their limbs trembling and weeping. Some there were looking at each other and weeping. Some were beating their heads. Some were beating their heads with both hands, their bodies extremely weakened. Some were rolling their eyes, uttering sobs, their hips trembling as if the soles of their feet were burned, uttering cries of woe, uttering wails. Some were lamenting, "Alas, Buddha! Alas, Buddha!" Their faces were filled with tears, painful and weak. They were rubbing their eyes with the palms of their hands, uttering cries of woe, weeping sorrowfully, tormented by the sting of sorrow, rubbing their faces, weeping sorrowfully, uttering wails. Other millions of beings, filled with tears, were shedding tears, uttering great sounds. Some were joining their palms, shedding tears, uttering wails. Some were burned by the fire of sorrow, holding their heads with their right hands, uttering wails. Likewise, others were numb all over their bodies, holding their heads with their left hands, uttering wails. Some...
