The great bodhisattva Māra spoke to the son of Thirstless, saying: "Son of Thirstless, a bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. What are the four? They are: excessive pride, disrespect for the Dharma, contempt for virtuous friends, and speaking false words. Son of Thirstless, a bodhisattva who possesses these four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. Son of Thirstless, furthermore, a bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. What are the four? They are: associating with practitioners of the Hearer and Solitary Buddha vehicles, having faith in inferior vehicles, hating and slandering bodhisattvas, and being stingy with the Dharma from teachers. Son of Thirstless, a bodhisattva who possesses these four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. Son of Thirstless, furthermore, a bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. What are the four? They are: practicing deception, flattering sentient beings, speaking with a double tongue to virtuous friends, and being particularly attached to gain and respect. Son of Thirstless, a bodhisattva who possesses these four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. Son of Thirstless, furthermore, a bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. What are the four? They are: not recognizing the actions of demons, being obscured by the obscurations of karma, having weak superior intention, and lacking wisdom and skillful means. Son of Thirstless, a bodhisattva who possesses these four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. Son of Thirstless, listen to the reason why a good man or good woman forgets the stainless, glorious mind of enlightenment! Son of Thirstless, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very Fortunate Aeon, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings,

Became, the unsurpassed, the teacher of gods and humans. The Buddha, the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, appeared in the world, and when his teachings were established, there appeared a Brahmin like a great Sala tree, named Norzang (Wealthy Good), who was deceived by Mara and became extremely arrogant. He did not go to the Tathagata, but was overcome by arrogance, and together with Brahmins and householder Dharma speakers, he engaged in fighting, debating, and competing, and also showed disrespect to the Dharma and Dharma speakers. At that time, he was separated from five dharmas. Which five? Namely: seeing the Buddha, hearing the Dharma, engaging in various meaningful conversations with Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have correctly entered the Mahayana, dedicating roots of virtue, and making the mind of enlightenment very firm. He lost these, therefore he fully embraced non-virtuous dharmas and did not embrace the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, the son of the Shakya clan was separated from these five dharmas. Son of the Shakya clan, at that time, do you doubt, hesitate, or wonder if that Brahmin like a great Sala tree, Norzang, was another person? You should not see it that way. Why? Because this great Chandala, the immaculate splendor, at that time became the Brahmin like a great Sala tree, Norzang. Because of arrogance, he forgot his own mind of enlightenment. Because past roots of virtue completely protected him, and he was only saved by the mind of enlightenment, therefore he was not born into evil realms. He was filled with arrogance, and even though he obtained the power of the great Chandala, he did not lose the opportunity to see the Buddha due to the blessing of the Buddha. He could not bear the power of the Tathagata, and from then on, having heard the power of the Tathagata and the Bodhisattva, all arrogance, complacency, and pride completely disappeared. Because he did not commit evil deeds, he saw the Tathagata. The roots of virtue arising from his previous causes manifested, therefore he quickly obtained clairvoyance and forbearance. Then the Bodhisattva
