Now, if one possesses learning, one will develop contemplation. If one has contemplation, one will thoroughly seek the Dharma in accordance with the principles. If one strives to thoroughly seek the Dharma in accordance with the principles, the evil demon will not find an opportunity. If one possesses learning, one will be separated from wrong views and will also generate right views. If one enters the right path, the demon will not find an opportunity. If one enters the right path, one will be close to understanding the meaning and will be separated from harm. If one desires the meaning, one will truly follow the meaning. Son of good family, know that in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is diligent in much learning will be able to defeat the four maras. What are the four? They are: the mara of the aggregates, the mara of afflictions, the mara of death, and the mara of the son of the gods. These four maras can be defeated. Son of good family, furthermore, how did the Bodhisattvas of the past who strived for the Dharma and desired the Dharma seek learning? I will tell you a little about that. Son of good family, in the past, in a time past immeasurable kalpas ago, exceedingly immeasurable, long, boundless, and inconceivable, at that time, there was a great sage named Supreme, who lived in forests, forest edges, and mountains, possessed the five superknowledges, and always dwelt in loving-kindness and compassion. That sage was supreme. When he lived in those forest caves, he thought to himself: This dwelling in loving-kindness of mine will not bring joy to sentient beings, and this loving-kindness cannot pacify the greed, hatred, and ignorance of sentient beings, nor all the afflictions accumulated from beginningless time. This loving-kindness cannot generate the right view of the noble ones either! He also thought: From where does the right view of the noble ones arise? Then, he had this thought: The arising of the right view of the noble ones has two causes and two conditions. What are the two? They are: the voice of others and individual proper attention. These two are the

I think that these are the two causes and two conditions for generating the correct view of the ground. At that time, he generated the thought of striving to seek the Dharma completely, thinking: How can I find the well-spoken Dharma? Then, for the sake of the Dharma, he strived to seek the Dharma completely, and went to villages, cities, towns, regions, countries, and the palaces of kings to seek the Dharma. Although he sought, he did not find any Dharma speakers. Then, a god belonging to the retinue of Mara appeared before him, went to that hermit, and said: Among the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, I hold a single verse of the Buddha's name spoken by the Buddha. The hermit said: Speak! The god said: If you peel the skin from your body, dry it in the sun and make it into paper, mix your blood and make it into ink, and make a pen from your bones, and then ask me for that verse, then I will give you that verse spoken by the Buddha. Son of good family, then that great hermit thought: From beginningless samsara, this body of mine has committed sins in those births and those birthplaces for many hundreds of thousands of kalpas, falling into the hands of enemies and executioners, being cut and chopped into many pieces by sharp weapons by robbers, thieves, and kings, etc., for the sake of desire and wealth, and has experienced hundreds of thousands of hardships such as cutting, binding, beating, and threatening. However, those bodies and those feelings of mine have not done anything meaningful for any sentient beings. Now, if I obtain the Dharma with this meaningless body, it will be the best attainment for me. He was happy, content, and joyful, and generated the perception of a teacher towards that god, peeled the skin from his body with a sharp weapon, dried it in the sun and made it into paper, dripped blood from his body, mixed his blood into ink, made a pen from his bones, and then joined his palms towards that god and said: God, please speak the Buddha's name spoken by the Buddha.
