One does not keep the precepts relying on the body. One does not keep the precepts relying on form, sound, smell, taste, tactile object, and phenomena. One does not keep the precepts relying on form. One does not keep the precepts relying on feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. One does not keep the precepts relying on the desire realm. One does not keep the precepts relying on the form realm. One does not keep the precepts relying on the formless realm. One does not keep the precepts out of fear of the terrors of the hell realms of sentient beings. One does not keep the precepts out of fear of the terrors of the birth place of animals. One does not keep the precepts out of fear of the terrors of the world of Yama, seeking refuge. One does not keep the precepts out of fear of the terrors of poor people. One does not keep the precepts out of fear of the terrors of poor gods, as well as nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. Rather, one keeps the precepts in order to abide in the conduct of the Buddha. One keeps the precepts in order to maintain the lineage of the Buddha, to maintain the lineage of the Dharma, and to maintain the lineage of the Sangha. One keeps the precepts in order to completely transcend birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and strife. One keeps the precepts desiring to completely liberate all sentient beings. One keeps the precepts desiring benefit, happiness, accomplishment, and well-being for all sentient beings. One keeps the precepts desiring the Dharma of the Buddha to abide. One keeps the precepts desiring to turn the wheel of Dharma. One keeps the precepts desiring to gather the noble Sangha completely. One keeps the precepts desiring that the lineage of the Buddha not be cut off, desiring that the lineage of the Dharma not be cut off, and desiring that the lineage of the Sangha not be cut off.

Furthermore, desiring to fully utilize the noble lineage, one upholds morality. Desiring to attain divine clairvoyance, desiring to attain samadhi, desiring to attain wisdom, desiring to attain liberation, desiring to see the wisdom of liberation, one upholds morality. Desiring to attain magical powers, desiring to attain taming powers, one upholds morality. That morality is also without deficiency, without corruption, without mixture, without turbidity, self-governed, well-perfected, well-considered, without error, without flaw, pure, fragrant, praised by the wise, praised by all Buddhas, without reproach, in accordance with the Dharma, making the practice of Dharma the essence. Possessing such a collection of morality, one does not fall away from ten qualities. What are the ten? They are as follows: one does not fall away from the sovereignty of a universal monarch, and in that, one also has diligence, desiring enlightenment. One does not fall away from the position of Indra, and in that, one also has diligence, desiring enlightenment, and solely desiring to see the Buddha. One does not fall away from the position of Brahma, and in that, one also has diligence, desiring enlightenment. For the sake of attaining faith and understanding, one does not fall away from seeing the Buddha. For the sake of diligently practicing the Dharma as heard, one does not fall away from hearing the Dharma. One does not fall away from knowing the vows of a Bodhisattva. For the sake of desiring to know all virtuous root Dharmas, one does not fall away from fearlessness. One does not fall away from meditative concentration. One does not fall away from the praise of all Buddhas, Pratyekabuddhas, Shravakas, and Bodhisattvas. For the sake of quickly attaining clairvoyance and perfecting the all-knowing wisdom, one does not fall away. Thus, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses such a collection of morality does not fall away from those ten qualities. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who abides in such a collection of morality,
