If one relies on, approaches, and reveres, then from virtuous spiritual friends, one will hear the truly certain Dharmas. Having heard, one will also practice. Having entered the true Dharma, one will accomplish all the benefits of sentient beings who abide in inverted practice. If one strives for the benefit of sentient beings, one will not fall into what is unreasonable. If one enters into reason, then, like this, one will gain skill in understanding the superior and non-superior faculties of sentient beings, and what is reasonable and unreasonable. Son of good family, thus, Bodhisattvas who engage in the accumulation of generosity will obtain such distinctions of qualities. Son of good family, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should generate the perception of one with respect to inner and outer phenomena; one should not generate the perception of two. That is, whatever is the inner earth element and whatever is the outer earth element, these two are non-dual, and cannot be made into two. Why is that? This body is like grass, wood, walls, and the appearance of roads; it has no function, no agency, no mind, no essence, because it is gathered by the elements. If someone cuts, chops, strikes with a stick, weapon, wood, or clod of earth, one should not generate the consciousness of 'I feel.' One should not look at the body. One should not generate attachment to life. One should also not generate hatred and aversion towards those sentient beings. On top of that, one should generate loving-kindness towards those sentient beings. Son of good family, for example, if one takes from a medicinal tree its root, or its trunk, or its branch, or its bark, or its leaf, or its flower, or its fruit, or its heartwood, it would think: 'Take my root, but do not take the trunk?' or 'Take my trunk, but do not take the root?' or 'Take my branch, but do not take the leaf?' or 'Take my leaf, but do not take the branch?' Likewise, 'Take my twig, flower, fruit, bark, and heartwood, but do not take what is without heartwood?' or 'Take what is without heartwood, but do not take the heartwood?'

does not discriminate. Thus, the medicinal tree does not discriminate in all of everything, but although the medicinal tree does not discriminate, it eliminates superior, intermediate, and inferior diseases. Likewise, son of good family, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should generate the perception of this body of the four great elements as being like a medicinal tree. One should say, 'Whatever any sentient being needs, take it.' If someone wants a hand, then a hand; if someone wants a foot, then a foot; if someone wants an eye, then an eye; if someone wants flesh, then flesh; if someone wants blood, then blood; if someone wants bone, then bone; if someone wants marrow, then marrow; if someone wants a head, then a head; if someone wants all limbs and parts, then let them take all my limbs and parts.' Son of good family, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who thinks in this way manifests through the accumulation of giving with inexhaustible merit. When that Bodhisattva Mahasattva gives, one should dedicate it in order to perfect the generosity of all miserly sentient beings. One should dedicate it in order for poor sentient beings to obtain great enjoyment. When he completely gives away limbs and parts, one should dedicate it in order for all the limbs and parts of all sentient beings to become complete. When he gives, he should not dedicate it at all times for three things. What are the three? That is, one should not dedicate it in order to obtain desirable pleasures, kingship, enjoyment, and power. One should not dedicate it in order to make oneself endowed with merit. One should not dedicate it in order to obtain the ground of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. When he gives, he should dedicate that giving in order to perfect the complete purification of the four branches. What are the four branches that are completely pure and complete? One should dedicate it in order to purify the Buddha-field completely, and one should dedicate it in order to purify the Bodhisattva Sangha completely.

One should dedicate for the sake of activity, one should dedicate for the sake of fully maturing all sentient beings, and one should dedicate for the sake of fully purifying the omniscient wisdom. Thus, in order to fully purify and fully perfect the four limbs, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should dedicate that giving. Son of the lineage, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should make giving near and firm, and should not exhaust it. How does the giving of Bodhisattvas become exhausted? Son of the lineage, the giving of Bodhisattvas who possess four qualities becomes exhausted. What are the four? Namely, not dedicating, not being skilled in means, wishing to be born in a low place, and relying on evil friends. Son of the lineage, the giving of Bodhisattvas who possess these four qualities becomes exhausted. Son of the lineage, the giving of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who possess four qualities does not become exhausted, but becomes near and firm. What are the four? Namely, dedicating to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, being skilled in means, desiring the kingdom of Dharma, and relying on virtuous friends. Son of the lineage, the giving of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who possess these four qualities does not become exhausted, but becomes near and firm. Son of the lineage, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should give with four qualities manifest. What are the four? Namely, not abandoning the mind of enlightenment, having compassion for sentient beings, not contradicting the teachings of the Tathagata, and not expecting the ripening of Dharma and material giving. Son of the lineage, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should give with these four qualities manifest. Son of the lineage, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should give in order to establish sentient beings in three dharmas. What are the three? Namely, establishing all sentient beings in enlightenment, and establishing them in the Dharma that is taught.
