Should do. By abandoning displeasure, one should abide in joy. By abandoning all signs, one should abide in equanimity. By initiating diligence, one should desire learning. Without being overcome by dullness and sleep, one should enter into walking. Well-Guarded, therefore, Bodhisattvas who have come forth from the household life, having heard this samādhi, and desiring to receive and cultivate it, should abide in those dharmas, and should receive this samādhi. They should cultivate it. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Well-Guarded said this to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, it is wonderful that these vast and excellent dharmas have been taught and spoken by the Tathāgata! Venerable Blessed One, those lazy Bodhisattvas who arise, having heard this samādhi, will be afraid, will be frightened, will be extremely frightened. They will not obtain joy, satisfaction, and great faith in expounding such excellent dharmas, and they will think: We should cultivate this samādhi from another Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One. Now we are weak in body and have many diseases. They will think in this way, and those people, having heard this samādhi in which the present Buddha dwells manifestly, will be discouraged, will be completely discouraged, and will not even initiate diligence to cultivate this samādhi in which the present Buddha dwells manifestly. Venerable Blessed One, also those Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas who initiate diligence, abide in mindfulness, seek the Dharma, respect the Dharma, uphold the Dharma, teach the Dharma, speak the Dharma, completely receive the Dharma, practice the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, completely abandon body and life, do not rely on gain, respect, and praise, do not seek virtuous fame, are not attached to the alms bowl and Dharma robes, are displeased with villages, cities, towns, regions, kingdoms, territories, and royal retinues, incline towards solitude, enter into solitude, and abide in solitude, those who arise, they are the present Buddha manifestly abiding

Hearing this samadhi of the Bodhisattva who severs, they will not be discouraged. They will not be completely discouraged. They will not be afraid. They will not be alarmed. They will not be terrified, and they will also obtain great joy, satisfaction, and delight. To hold, fully comprehend, retain, read, write, teach, and meditate on this samadhi, they will also undertake great effort. Venerable Blessed One, these sons or daughters of good family will not seek to hear more from Buddhas who have not yet come. Nor will they strive to accomplish the distinctions of mantras, qualities, and Dharma. Even so, Venerable Blessed One, in the future, those sons or daughters of good family who have acted towards the past victors and have undertaken effort, when they hear this kind of samadhi spoken by the Thus-Gone One, will think: 'We would rather that our bodies, skin, flesh, blood, bones, marrow, and limbs dry up and completely dry up in this very place, than to die in a state of laziness like this. We must not abandon effort without fully comprehending, speaking, and meditating on such a vast and excellent Dharma.' Thus, they will undertake effort. Noble beings, those who always undertake effort, upon hearing this kind of sutra spoken by the Thus-Gone One, will immediately obtain great joy, satisfaction, and delight. Having thus requested, the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Good Protector, saying: Good Protector, well done, well done! Furthermore, Good Protector, the Dharma you have spoken in accordance is not inverted, and it is thus, just so, well done! I also rejoice in it, and in what I rejoice, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones of the past, future, and present, also rejoice. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: Separately

I shall speak of the learning of liberation; all of these should be learned and relied upon in monasteries. If one constantly practices the virtues of what has been learned, then this samadhi will not be difficult to attain. All entertained guests should be abandoned, and attachment to flavors should also be completely abandoned. One should regard the one from whom one hears as the teacher, and one should draw near to the concepts of equality and similarity. Abandon jealousy, desire, and pride; abandon greed, hatred, and delusion; correctly generate meditative concentration and mental cultivation; one should enter into this samadhi. Without jealousy, having abandoned greed, well-disciplined, having abandoned anger, focusing on the bodies of the Buddhas, one should enter into this samadhi. Do not abandon diligence, do not be overcome by sleep, do not associate with relatives and friends, be endowed with deportment, abandon the multitude and friends, then cultivate this stainless samadhi. The Ninth Chapter, "Samadhi Questioned by Bhadrapala." Fourth Volume. After thus speaking, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Bhadrapala addressed the Bhagavan as follows: "Venerable Bhagavan, for a virtuous bhikshuni who has entered the Great Vehicle, having heard this samadhi in which the Buddhas presently abide, if she wishes to uphold or cultivate it, Venerable Bhagavan, in what dharma should she abide in order to uphold this samadhi? How should she cultivate it?" After thus addressing him, the Bhagavan spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Bhadrapala as follows: "Bhadrapala, for a virtuous bhikshuni who has entered the Great Vehicle, having heard this samadhi, if she wishes to uphold or cultivate it, she should always be respectful, always be without jealousy, and not be angry. She should subdue pride, be without arrogance, initiate diligence, be without laziness, and abandon drowsiness and sleep. Without sleeping, she should be diligent in yoga, and she should abandon all seeking of gain, respect, praise, Dharma robes, food, bedding, medicine for the sick, and possessions. Her livelihood should be completely pure, and she should not rely on body and life either.
