Therefore, pondering in this way: even with the marks, one cannot realize complete perfect enlightenment. If one could realize complete perfect enlightenment with the marks, then a universal monarch would also realize complete perfect enlightenment. Why is that? Because a universal monarch also possesses the thirty-two marks. Therefore, pondering in this way: if one cannot realize complete perfect enlightenment with the marks, then can one realize complete perfect enlightenment with the Dharma? He thinks thus: one cannot realize complete perfect enlightenment even with the Dharma. Why is that? The Dharma is formless, invisible, unimpeded, without discrimination, without location, without appearance, invisible, unobservable, unborn, unceasing, like space. Therefore, one cannot realize complete perfect enlightenment. Therefore, pondering in this way: if one cannot realize complete perfect enlightenment with the Dharma, then can one realize complete perfect enlightenment with the roots of virtue? What is that like? He thinks thus: one cannot realize complete perfect enlightenment even with the roots of virtue. Why is that? A Bodhisattva's accumulated roots of virtue do not abide in the essence of enlightenment, and even holding onto the Buddha himself is not sufficient. If one examines other causes separately, they are not found. Then who realizes complete perfect enlightenment? When he examines in that way, even the roots of virtue are not found. Are the roots of virtue accumulated by form? Or by feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness? Form is inanimate, unmoving, and without mind. Therefore, it does not accumulate roots of virtue. Feeling is like a water bubble, bad, arising dependently, and arising from the aggregation of contact. Therefore, it does not accumulate roots of virtue. Perception is like a mirage, arising from the aggregation of eye, form, appearance, and attention. Therefore, it does not accumulate roots of virtue. Formation is without substance, false, of a deceptive nature, and arising from the aggregation of ignorance. Therefore, they do not accumulate roots of
