Nor was he born in the world of Yama or in the ranks of the Asuras. He was not born in unfavorable circumstances. He was not born into a low caste. He was not born into a poor caste. For countless eons, he never had a disease of the body caused by wind, or a disease caused by bile, or a disease caused by phlegm. He never had incomplete faculties. He never had yellow eyes, fearful eyes, cross-eyes, or a crooked face. He never had a body not adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being. He was never separated from the eighty minor marks of excellence. When he became a god among the gods, or a human among humans, he was never without power and wealth. He was never separated from perfect aspirations. He was never born in a Buddha-field without a Buddha. He was never previously arrogant due to being without illness, having beauty, possessions, attendants, and wealth. He never developed the pride of women or the pride of clothing. He was never not a patron. He never developed the pride of discipline. He was never without discipline. He never developed the pride of learning. He was never not learned. He never developed thoughts of desire. He was never not surrounded by a retinue of consorts. He never did not practice celibacy; as soon as he thought of it, he obtained a son. He never developed thoughts of harming others. He never developed thoughts of injuring others. Thus, that king generated this powerful samadhi and thoroughly accomplished these qualities of a Bodhisattva and others as well. What do you think? Manjushri, do you think that the king named Steadfast Wisdom at that time was someone else? Do not view it that way. Why? The Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, Accomplisher of All Purposes, was the king named Steadfast Wisdom at that time. Manjushri, therefore, a Bodhisattva who has entered the Great Vehicle should seek the power of the roots of virtue associated with the perfection of giving. Thus, he should train.

O Manjushri, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has rightly entered the Great Vehicle, who practices unobstructed liberation, should manifestly accumulate vast roots of virtue endowed with the perfection of morality, and should generate great power of roots of virtue endowed with the perfection of morality. Chapter Two. Manjushri, in the past, in times gone by, in countless eons, immeasurable eons, inconceivable eons, unequaled eons, unmeasurable eons, unspeakable eons, there appeared two royal ascetics named Brahma-deva and Agni-datta. The two of them resided in one place. They wandered from monastery to monastery, from forest to forest, from valley to valley, from dense forest to dense forest, thinking, "If we were to live together with women, we would transgress the precepts arising from the cause of desire. If we were to associate with those who are attached, we would also transgress the precepts arising from the cause of malice. If we were to associate with those who are attached or who do not see fault in those who are attached, we would also transgress the precepts arising from the cause of delusion." Having seen such faults, they wandered from monastery to monastery, from forest to forest, from valley to valley, from dense forest to dense forest. Manjushri, at that time there was a king named Ajita-sena. When he was being consecrated as king, he allowed those who had manifested from the household to freely use grass, wood, and water, and he rejoiced and praised them, saying these words. The two ascetics also resided in the kingdom of King Ajita-sena. At that time, King Ajita-sena was harmed by thieves who robbed him and fled. The ascetics saw the thieves fleeing. The thieves also saw the ascetics residing in the forest, and the thieves joined their palms and said, "Ascetics, have you seen us? If someone asks, please do not point us out." Then, the ascetic Brahma-deva said to the ascetic Agni-datta, "Alas! Agni-datta, this has happened."

If it is very difficult, what should be done? If one says they have not seen it, then they are deceiving others. If one speaks of it, it may also cause harm. What should be done about this, please tell me. After speaking thus, the Rishi Fire-Given spoke to the Rishi Brahma-deva as follows: O Brahma-deva, do not think that this will cause harm. Why is that? Brahma-deva, those who abide with attachment to body and life, their minds are seized and occupied by all sorts of arising defilements. Brahma-deva, it is like dust sticking to an oily cloth; similarly, those Brahma-devas who abide with attachment to body and life, their minds are completely seized and occupied by all sorts of arising defilements. Brahma-deva, those who do not cling to body and life, their minds will not be completely seized and occupied by all sorts of arising defilements. Brahma-deva, it is like dust touching a completely clean cloth, which disappears immediately after being shaken off; similarly, those Brahma-devas who do not cling to body and life, their minds will not be completely seized and abide by all sorts of arising defilements. Therefore, Brahma-deva, we too should not cling to body and life. Brahma-deva, if we do not cling to body and life, we will not be seized and abide by the arising defilements. O Brahma-deva, the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-ones, have not taught that asceticism with attachment to body and life will be accomplished. Then, Rishi Fire-Given showed Rishi Brahma-deva non-attachment to body and life, and thus attained non-attachment to body and life. Then, King De-mi-pam-pa searched for those thieves and went to that dense forest. King De-mi-pam-pa saw those Rishis dwelling in the dense forest. Having seen them, he went to where those Rishis were, and sent some people to search for the thieves in that dense forest. Then, King De-mi-pam-pa bowed his head at the feet of those Rishis and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, King De-
