will become. Mañjuśrī, in the past, from immeasurable and countless kalpas to the unspeakable, beyond that, and even further beyond, at that time, there arose a kalpa called Constant Light. In that Constant Light kalpa, the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, perfect in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed charioteer who tames beings, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Immaculate Moonlight Majestic King, appeared in the world. In the teachings of that Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha Immaculate Moonlight Majestic King, there appeared a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva named Diligent Author. Thereafter, that Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Diligent Author did not see anyone who was a diligent author like himself. At that time, in that Bhagavan's Buddha-field, among all the pure-conduct Bodhisattvas, that Bodhisattva Diligent Author was considered the most excellent. Thereafter, the Tathāgata Immaculate Moonlight Majestic King, surrounded and attended by hundreds of thousands of retinue, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Diligent Author rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and addressed the Bhagavan as follows: Bhagavan, if the Bhagavan would grant me the opportunity to ask and then request a prophecy, then I would like to report some matters to the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha. After speaking thus, the Bhagavan, the Tathāgata Immaculate Moonlight Majestic King, said to the Bodhisattva Diligent Author: Son of good family, ask the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha whatever you wish, and I will satisfy your mind with your questions and their prophecies. Then, the Bodhisattva Diligent Author to the Bhagavan, the Tathāgata Immaculate Moonlight Majestic King

Then Po (a name) reported this: "Oh Blessed One, 'exerting effort, exerting effort,' called exerting effort, to what extent does the Blessed One say that a Bodhisattva is exerting effort?" After reporting this, the Tathagata Immaculate Moon Light Majesty King said this to the Bodhisattva exerting effort: "Good, good! Son of good family, you ask the Tathagata about such a meaning, son of good family, you have set out for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, for the love of the world, for the sake of gods and humans, and for the sake of benefit and happiness. Son of good family, therefore, listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. Blessed One, good," after reporting this, the Bodhisattva exerting effort listened as the Blessed One did, and the Blessed One said this to him: "When a Bodhisattva does not abandon effort in order to thoroughly realize equality, and does not stop for even a moment, and like this, in order to thoroughly realize all dharmas, his wisdom does not change and his mind does not wander, to that extent, son of good family, in order to accomplish all enlightenment, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is exerting effort. Furthermore, son of good family, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva remembers the effort of the past Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Complete Buddhas, and like that, those past Tathagatas, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, both body and mind are completely grasped as they really are, giving, giving, and likewise I will give, and when giving like that, if one realizes it as it really is, then the perfection of giving will become completely pure. How are body and mind completely grasped as they really are? For example, that is giving, the giver, the receiver, the receiver is unattainable, that is his perfection of wisdom. Thinking 'I will completely purify the inexpressible Buddha-field' is grasping body and mind as they really are, for example, the Buddha's

Thinking of making the inexpressible Buddha-fields completely pure, this is to properly hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will completely ripen the inexpressible sentient beings, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will completely perfect the powers of the Tathagata, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will completely take hold of the fearlessnesses of the Tathagata, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will completely take hold of the authorities of the Tathagata, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will completely take hold of the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will completely take hold of omniscience, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will learn skillful means, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will enter the minds of sentient beings, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will learn to know the time, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will learn to know the measure, know the meaning, know the Dharma, know myself, know others, know the superior and the non-superior, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like that, the reasons for completely abandoning should be completely abandoned. Like this, the reasons for approaching should be approached, this is to properly and well hold body and mind. Like this, thinking that I will learn to be skilled in examining the body, this is to properly and well hold body and mind, therefore, to properly and well hold the body and to properly and well hold the mind, this is called diligence. Whatever enters without wavering and without slackening, continuously without ceasing, continuously connected, following and holding, that is called effort. Whatever this diligence and whatever this action, to be manifestly diligent for this, that is called initiating diligence. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva dili-
