O, Mañjuśrī, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva should strive for equality in diligence. For a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who strives for equality in diligence, the perfection of meditation will manifest, and the practice will be completely fulfilled. Why is that? Because in order to attain equality in diligence, the mind becomes one-pointed, and therefore it becomes the supreme peace. O, Mañjuśrī, in the past, in a time long ago, there were immeasurable, countless, inconceivable, incomparable, unmeasurable, and inexpressible eons, even beyond that, there was a Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara-puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāsta devamanuṣyāṇāṃ, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Śāntasthāna-yathārtha-abhijña, who appeared in the world. O, Mañjuśrī, in the Buddha-field of that Tathāgata Śāntasthāna-yathārtha-abhijña, there were no afflictions that roam in desire in all of everything, in every way of everything, and no entanglements of desire arose for all those beings. O, Mañjuśrī, at that time, in that era, in the teachings of that Bhagavan Tathāgata Śāntasthāna-yathārtha-abhijña, there was a monk named Dhyāna-gocara who served that Tathāgata. He served the Tathāgata Śāntasthāna-yathārtha-abhijña with pleasing things for eighteen eons, not with displeasing things. For that monk Dhyāna-gocara, all dharmas became the object of meditation. Thus, that monk Dhyāna-gocara meditated on Śamatha for eighteen eons. Because he possessed that power of Śamatha, he gained mastery over all undertakings. Whatever dharma he focused on, he completely meditated on that dharma as peaceful, equal to Nirvana, without characteristics, determined in the Dharmadhatu, equal and similar to space. Whatever became the characteristic of the object, the mind also became that characteristic. Whatever is the characteristic of the mind

That which has become that is the characteristic of being one-pointed. That which has become the characteristic of being one-pointed has become the characteristic of enlightenment. That which has become the characteristic of enlightenment has become the characteristic of the Dharma of the aspects of enlightenment. That which has become the characteristic of the Dharma of the aspects of enlightenment has become the characteristic of a Bodhisattva. That which has become the characteristic of a Bodhisattva has become the characteristic of peace, that is, all Dharmas are peaceful, without wavering, and without doubt. With that root of virtue, for incalculable eons, he never became associated with the afflictions of indulging in desires, but by the power of aspiration, he was born many times in the desire realm. Why is that? Because in the desire realm there are many sentient beings who can become vessels, and relying on this power of meaning, he was born in the desire realm, being completely overwhelmed by great compassion and out of loving-kindness. Manjushri, what do you think? If you think that the monk called "Dwelling in Meditative Practice" at that time and at that moment was someone else, Manjushri, you should not view it that way. Why is that? The Tathagata All-Meaning-Accomplished was the monk called "Dwelling in Meditative Practice" at that time and at that moment. Manjushri, therefore, a Bodhisattva who wishes to manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment should cultivate Vipashyana that is in harmony with Shamatha. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva who cultivates Vipashyana in harmony with Shamatha will perfectly accomplish the Prajnaparamita of supreme peace. Manjushri, in the past, in the past, beyond countless eons to the furthest shore of the unspeakable, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, complete in knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, unsurpassed tamer of beings, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named King of Crests. Manjushri, the lifespan of that Bhagavan Tathagata King of Crests was ninety billion, hundred thousand, kotis of years.
