He became known as Peaceful Wisdom. Moreover, from then on, for incalculable eons, he was never separated from the dedication of the perfection of generosity, and from inconceivable thoughts. Until he attained complete and perfect enlightenment, he was constantly and continuously inseparable from other immeasurable qualities of a bodhisattva. That itself became the cause of his immeasurable pure Buddha-fields, from countless pure Buddha-fields to inexpressible pure Buddha-fields. Manjushri, therefore, a bodhisattva-mahasattva who wishes to purify Buddha-fields from immeasurable to inexpressible, should give in this way and strive in the perfection of generosity. Manjushri, in the past, in a past time, immeasurable, countless, inconceivable, incomparable, unmeasurable, beyond the inexpressible, even further beyond, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, complete in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Lokavidu, unsurpassed guide of beings, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Immeasurable Splendor. Manjushri, in the teachings of that Tathagata Immeasurable Splendor, there was a monk named Peaceful Wisdom, who had planted roots of virtue in countless millions of Buddhas. Then, that monk Peaceful Wisdom went to where the Bhagavan Tathagata Immeasurable Splendor was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, that monk Peaceful Wisdom asked the Tathagata Immeasurable Splendor this: Bhagavan, how should a bodhisattva, acting for enlightenment, practice the perfection of generosity? How does the perfection of generosity of a bodhisattva practicing the perfection of generosity become completely pure? After he asked this, the Tathagata Immeasurable Splendor to the monk

Thus he spoke to Peaceful Intellect: "Peaceful Intellect, a bodhisattva mahasattva who practices for enlightenment should comprehend that all dharmas are by nature without entity. He should comprehend that giving is without nature, he should comprehend that receiving is without nature, he should comprehend that the giver is without nature, he should comprehend that the place of giving is without nature, he should comprehend that the offering at the place of giving is without nature, he should comprehend that dedication is without nature, he should also comprehend that what is dedicated is without nature, he should also comprehend that where one dedicates and by what one dedicates are without nature. Why is that? Giving is empty by the nature of giving. Receiving is empty by the nature of receiving. The place of giving is also empty by the nature of the place of giving. The fruit of giving is also empty by the nature of the fruit of giving. Dedication is also empty by the nature of dedication. Enlightenment is also empty by the nature of enlightenment. Thus, devotion to emptiness will completely purify the perfection of giving with the thought of immeasurable action, and one will also obtain the name of the perfection of giving and become stainless. Peaceful Intellect, it is like this: for example, if a magician manifests a precious woman, it is also counted as a precious woman, but the name of a precious woman is not designated there. Likewise, Peaceful Intellect, although the nature of giving is not designated in giving, it is also counted as the perfection of giving. Although the nature is not designated in receiving, it is also counted as receiving. Although the nature is not designated in the giver, it is also counted as the giver. Although the nature is not designated in the fruit of giving, it is also counted as the fruit of giving. Although the nature is not designated in enlightenment, it is also counted as enlightenment. Although the nature is not designated in the bodhisattva, it is

also goes into the numbers. Thus, although the bodhisattva Endowed with Serenity does not fixate on the nature of actions, he does not waste any actions either. Just that much makes his perfection of generosity complete. Then, the monk Endowed with Serenity was caused by the Tathagata Immeasurable Splendor to engage in the perfection of generosity in such a way, and having obtained the complete mastery of the peaceful ground, he never engages in the non-peaceful ground with that root of virtue. Whatever peace of nirvana, that is the peace of generosity, and seeing it thus, the peaceful dharmas become manifest. Mañjuśrī, at that time, at that moment, if you doubt or waver, thinking that the one who became the monk Endowed with Serenity was someone else, Mañjuśrī, you should not see it that way. Why is that? Because the Tathagata All-Meaning-Accomplished, at that time, at that moment, was the one who became the monk Endowed with Serenity. Mañjuśrī, therefore, a bodhisattva mahāsattva should give with the equality of nirvana, making generosity become equality. Thus, his perfection of generosity is complete. A bodhisattva mahāsattva who trains in the perfection of generosity will abide in the perfection of discipline. Why is that? Because generosity and discipline are the same, since they are without inherent existence. Mañjuśrī, in the past, in bygone times, there were immeasurable, countless, inconceivable, incomparable, unmeasurable, unspeakable eons, beyond even the furthest shore of that, at that time, at that moment, there arose an eon called Pure Jewel. Mañjuśrī, in that eon of Pure Jewel, there appeared a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Tamer of Beings, Supreme, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Unparalleled Diligence. At that time, at that moment, there arose a Brahmin lineage, like a great sala tree, named Given by All-Pervading.
