Do it! Why is that? Because all dharmas are empty, there is no characteristic of duality, and it is not permissible to contemplate the characteristic of one; it is without characteristics. Its name is truly solitary, the thought of the Buddha; it has neither birth nor cessation; it is without characteristics. Why is that? The name of the Tathagata should not be called color, nor form, nor mind, nor discrimination. It is neither wrong nor not wrong, neither taken nor abandoned, neither capable nor wisdom, neither knowledge nor ignorance. The Tathagata cannot be spoken of, nor can it be conceived; there is no perception. Now, do not burn the good characteristics. Do not speak flattering words. The Buddha has no attachment to all dharmas. He has not seen any dharma that exists and can be attached to and measured. If such a person cannot attain Buddhahood, what need is there to mention the mind? Shariputra, one who teaches in this way is called a virtuous friend. Within the supreme teachings, there is no definitive determination of who is a virtuous friend and who is a bad friend. Furthermore, Shariputra, some monks teach other monks, saying: "Monk, discriminate clearly, understand the dharmas thoroughly, and do not contemplate the characteristics of dharmas." When that monk practices in this way, without obstruction or attachment in his mind, he comprehends the characteristics of all dharmas as one; that is without characteristics. If that person does not generate the perception of dharmas, what need is there to mention the perception of self-view and person-view? Shariputra, what do you think? Can a person who contemplates the perception of dharmas pacify all dharmas? World-Honored One, no. Shariputra, for example, can a tree without roots cause branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits to ripen? World-Honored One, no. Similarly, Shariputra, if someone has not obtained the root seed of all dharmas, can that person generate the perception of all dharmas? World-Honored One, no. Shariputra, if someone does not contemplate the perception of dharmas, then

Can that person pacify all dharmas? World Honored One, no. That person has not attained all dharmas, has not attained the characteristics of dharmas, has not attained tranquility, and does not make distinctions. Since there is neither birth nor cessation, that person, at that time, because there is no birth and no cessation, should not be said to have attained Nirvana. Nor should it be said that the name has already attained Nirvana. Shariputra, such a speaker is called a virtuous friend. In the supreme teaching, there is neither a virtuous friend nor an evil friend. Shariputra, if someone achieves such characteristics, it is rare in the world. Because of obtaining non-perversion, seeing the true truth is called right view. Moreover, Shariputra, right view is called upright conduct, upright practice, upright path, upright knowledge. Because there is no perversion and seeing things as they are, the Tathagata speaks of it as right view. Shariputra, if some sentient beings are not perverse and truly realize the truth, then there is right view. If someone gives rise to the thought of self-view, the thought of person-view, the thought of sentient being-view, then such people all appear to be walking in the wrong path. Shariputra, the Buddha and his disciples have never said that there is self-view, have never said that there is a person, have never said that there are sentient beings, have never said that there is life, have never said that there is permanence or annihilation. Therefore, the Buddha and his disciples are called right view. Why? Because of upright observation, because of non-perversion. Shariputra, all ordinary people cannot enter into this. Why? Because all ordinary people do not have right view. There is only right view that follows others. If one obtains gentle forbearance, one cannot be true to reality. Shariputra, the names right view and wrong view are different. Because of seeing things as they are, it is called right view. The happiness of the world, seeing through the growth of wealth and profit, is the right view of the world, but they are all false and cannot be liberated from birth and death. Shariputra, the Buddha said.
