I am in a place suitable for use as a toilet, placing the food aside. After washing my feet, I sit down and place the food in front of me, generating thoughts of disgust and separation, thoughts of impurity, thoughts of feces, thoughts of putridity, thoughts of vomit, thoughts of smeared wounds, thoughts of relief after obtaining, thoughts like the flesh of a son, thoughts of rotten fruit, and thoughts of heavy excretion. In short, generate thoughts of death for the body, thoughts of bruising, thoughts of ulceration, and thoughts of decay and decomposition. Shariputra, a monk should generate such thoughts. Consuming food without a mind of desire is to maintain the body and eliminate the distress of hunger and thirst. One should obtain the opportunity to use the path. One should think like this: I obtain this food in order to eliminate past suffering and not generate future suffering, to obtain a happy mind, to enjoy a healthy body, and even if the body is weak, to be able to barely walk, and to have convenient and stable movement. I obtain this food in order to obtain the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, the fruit of Arhatship, and the patience of the unborn Dharma. Shariputra, I allow begging for one who eats like that. Shariputra, if a begging monk develops attachment to the taste of the food he obtains, and generates thoughts like: the taste is delicious and sweet, thinking that by eating this food, I will obtain good complexion and a strong body, if such a monk does not think: I eat this food in order to practice the supreme path, then I will not even allow him to drink water, let alone food. Shariputra, not seeing the faults and evils of food, eating it casually like ashes, it would be easier to cut off flesh from one's thigh with one's own hand and eat it. Why? Because I allow accepting others' offerings through practice and attainment, and I do not allow those who do not practice to accept offerings. Shariputra, how is it called using names? Some monks are steadfast and unwavering, their minds
