From then on, it is obscured and unobstructed. Having renounced the household life and approached virtuous spiritual friends, one attains the fruit of a renunciate. That person obtains the path of lightened sins in the illusory life, and by practicing the illusory path, is liberated from the three evil paths. Shariputra, in my teachings, there are some monks who, though not monks, call themselves renunciates; though not practicing celibacy, claim to be practicing celibacy; they sever the roots of virtue, obscure the entry into Nirvana, and later, due to ignorance, lose the path. Due to the cause of the path being destroyed, they destroy virtuous dharmas, engage in foolish actions, enter evil paths, and enemies increase. They waste their lives, like the undead, their body color fades and becomes cold, and they lose the upright dharma. In my teachings, they are called defiled chaff. They are named enemies of the Dharma. They are named wicked people. They are named those used by demons. For example, they are like a latrine pit, like a corpse, like a dog's carcass, like a painted renunciate, like a renunciate in robes, similar in appearance but without the essence of a renunciate. Shariputra, it is like a fox living among a pride of lions. Or, like a small worm living in the illusory wheel of a Chakravartin king. Like a monkey living among the gods. Again, like a donkey living among many bull kings. Like a blind man living among those with divine eyes. Again, like a bat living among eagles. Shariputra, if a monk who has broken his vows lives in the Sangha, and if hundreds of thousands of millions of gods see that monk living in the Sangha, they will all be extremely saddened and utter these words: Why is it necessary to offer to such an evil person? He is a companion of demons. If one wishes to see that unsurpassed Buddha path, but speaks to those wearing ordinary clothes, and if some have faith and belief in the Buddha's teachings, then the nagas and asuras and others will call out loudly, praising greatly, why does that evil monk hide his body? For example, like a bad horse among a herd of tame horses.

It is like abiding. Such a foolish person thinks that he sees and knows everything, and says that there is no bad self-view. He hides and conceals it himself, and deceives the gods and humans, and is the enemy among all humans and gods. Ordinary people can see it, but no one will praise it. Shariputra, such an evil and sinful monk is recognized by the gods as an enemy. If he is no different from those wearing secular clothes, he will receive offerings, be sent off far away, prostrate with folded palms, and respectfully depict. The evil and foolish person is like a dead body, and all the clothes he wears are obtained by stealing. The food in the bowl is all stolen. It is not given by others. Even a little water is obtained by stealing. Shariputra, wherever a monk who has broken his vows goes, whether he goes to the east, south, west, or north, he goes by stealing. Why is that? Because all the rituals and Dharma instruments that that person possesses are the illusion of stealing. Walking, standing, sitting, lying down, leaving, arriving, watching, stretching, bending, wearing clothes, holding a bowl, everything he does, let me tell you a little bit now, all the actions and deeds of body, speech, and mind are the enemy of thieves. Some people shave the hair of such a person, as if shaving the hair of an enemy. Some people only generate a trace of respect. Everything done by a monk who has broken his vows is done by the enemy. Shariputra, the dwelling of an evil monk, whether large or small, and even his staff, are the Dharma of the enemy. Why is that? Shariputra, within Jambudvipa, whether it is a great king, a minister, an ordinary person, or non-human beings, all of them are regarded as enemies by that evil monk. Shariputra, kings and ministers do not expect to receive any benefits from an evil enemy. They will not say that he is equal to us. They will not say that he is better than us. Because the monk who has broken his vows wears the sacred Dharma robes, people hope to receive benefits from that person, so they allow him to live in the country.
