O Ra'gyur, the Buddha said: If noble Bodhisattvas make the firm determination to propagate the sacred Dharma, they will possess unwavering retinues. I ask: What causes sentient beings to be fierce and terrifying, with ulcerated tongues, palates, and uvulas? The Buddha said: Those who do not understand the three bases will cause sentient beings to be fierce and terrifying, with ulcerated tongues, palates, and uvulas. For example, when people and animals with ulcerated tongues eat the six tastes—sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and astringent—they cannot distinguish the different flavors. Similarly, sentient beings who do not understand, whose tongues, palates, and uvulas are ulcerated, who are fierce and terrifying, and who do not constantly understand the three bases, are said to have ulcerated tongues, palates, and uvulas. Son of good family, furthermore, those who do not constantly understand the Tathagata, I say, are the foremost among the blind. Those who constantly understand the Tathagata, I say, even if they possess physical eyes, also possess divine eyes. Son of good family, furthermore, those who, having heard this sutra, constantly understand the Tathagata and comprehend it, I say, possess divine eyes. Even if they possess divine eyes, those who do not constantly understand the Tathagata, I say, possess physical eyes. They will not be able to see or indicate what my beginning and end are like, even after many hundreds of thousands of eons. Therefore, because they are separated from constantly contemplating the Tathagata, I say they possess physical eyes. Son of good family, furthermore, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, is like the father and mother of all the world. Why is that? Because he teaches the Dharma to all two-legged and many-legged beings according to their own languages, and with one word, all sentient beings understand according to their own languages. They hold this thought: "Alas! He teaches the Dharma so that we may realize our own nature and thoughts." Son of good family, for example, a householder or a merchant...

When his own son is sixteen months old, he speaks like a mute. Because of this, if the son learns human language, would his father be called a mute? He answered: O Blessed One, it is not so, but it is to be seen how the son acts. The Buddha said: Son of good family, in the same way, the Tathagata also speaks like a mute. In order to make all sentient beings believe in the true Dharma, he shows such a form. Would the Tathagata be called a mute? He answered: O Blessed One, it is not so. The Tathagata always roars the lion's roar. Speaking like a mute is to conform to the world. Then, at that time, the Blessed One himself emitted various rays of light from his face. The rays of light struck the blacksmith's son Cunda, and he thought: Alas, for the Tathagata, a donation without poverty is rare. So he very quickly took the food that would satisfy the Tathagata and the Sangha of monks, and together with his retinue, quickly took the spotless vessels made of Jambudvipa gold, decorated in the middle with bright jewel protrusions, and some were silver vessels decorated with various precious jewels, filled with food mixed with various saffrons, and many offerings, and came out from the middle of the city and went to where the Blessed One was. Then, the powerful sons of the gods surrounded the blacksmith's son Cunda and said: Cunda, do not offer food for a while, let the Tathagata wait a moment. Then, the Blessed One again emitted his own rays of light, and the rays of light struck the sons of the gods and released Cunda. Then, all the gods and others who were gathered there made great offerings to the Blessed One, and together with Cunda, went to the Blessed One and prayed: Please allow the monks to have their meal time. Then the monks knew that it was time for the meal, and they behaved well, took their bowls in their hands, and sat down.

Then, Cunda, the blacksmith's son, prepared lion thrones of various kinds, which were so numerous that they could not be described in words, like things that could serve as a cause for the blissful realm of the world. He also prepared food and then said to the Bhagavan: Tathagata, please remain for a kalpa, or even longer than a kalpa. The Bhagavan said: Cunda, if I want to remain for a long time, quickly offer the perfection of generosity, because the final moment has arrived. Then, all the gods and humans, and the Bodhisattvas, all said: Alas, Cunda is fortunate that the Tathagata will enjoy the food he offered. We have no merit, and the food we prepared has become meaningless. Then, the Bhagavan manifested from every pore of his body, and from each pore, a Buddha, and within each retinue, he also manifested a Tathagata, along with all the sangha of monks, as if they were receiving offerings. The Tathagata himself enjoyed the food offered by Cunda. The food made by Cunda from eight kinds of Nalita rice from Magadha, also, through the power of the Tathagata, made all the sangha of monks satisfied with the food. Then, Cunda was also happy, thinking: My offering has been enjoyed by the Tathagata and the sangha of monks, and he will enter into complete nirvana. All the retinue thought: The Tathagata has enjoyed the food we offered, but not Cunda's. After enjoying the food we offered, the Tathagata will enter into complete nirvana, and thinking so, they were all very happy. In that great retinue, the intervals between the Tathagatas enjoying food and dwelling appeared to be offered by the extent of the tip of a small needle. Some were dwelling in places as small as the tip of a needle, and the food and offerings appeared to be the same. Then, at that time, the gods, humans, and asuras were weeping and wailing, because the Tathagata, after enjoying the food we each offered, was about to enter into complete nirvana.
