DKG054 0001.The Noble Great Nirvana Mahayana Sutra..g2.0f

English

Even for those sentient beings who hold on without needing to generate Bodhicitta, it will become a cause for Bodhi, except for those with great desire. Son of the lineage, thus it is said, this great Nirvana Sutra is so inconceivable, like a great physician, it is the supreme among all doctors. This Sutra is the king of all Sutras. Son of the lineage, furthermore, just as a boat comes from the other shore to this shore to save sentient beings, and goes from this shore to the other shore, so too is the Tathagata's Great Nirvana, after Nirvana, like a boat going to the other shore to save sentient beings, and in whatever place there are those to be tamed, he shows the complete Buddha. Therefore, just as a boat goes wherever it wants to save sentient beings, so too is the Tathagata, therefore he is called the Great Guide. After that, the Tathagata is permanent and stable. If the boat exists, the guide can save, the Tathagata exists permanently, and will continue to save sentient beings and be born. Son of the lineage, again, for example, in the great ocean, a large boat travels, if it encounters wind, it can travel straight and in an instant travel countless yojanas. If it does not encounter wind, then even after many years it can only stay in one place, or capsize. Similarly, sentient beings who have fallen into the great ocean of ignorance, if they encounter the wind king of the Great Nirvana Sutra, they can quickly reach the other shore of Bodhi like a boat. Those who have not encountered the wind king of the Sutra will be lost in the wheel of Samsara, like a boat capsizing in the great ocean. Son of the lineage, again, for example, in the terrifying great ocean, if one does not encounter wind, one will think that this must be death. Those extremely frightened sentient beings, unknowingly carried away by the wind king in an instant, will think: Alas, it is so wonderful that we are able to be liberated.

Likewise, this King of Winds of the Sutra in this great sutra, unknowingly places beings who dwell in the great ocean of unknowing, those who believe that generating the mind of enlightenment is unnecessary, upon the cause of enlightenment. Son of good family, furthermore, for example, when a snake sheds its old skin, does that mean it has died or disappeared? Answer: Blessed One, it is not so. The Buddha said: Son of good family, just so, the Thus-Gone One also, like shedding old skin, abandons the body of skillful means, abandons the old poisonous tree. Does that mean the Thus-Gone One becomes impermanent? Answer: Blessed One, it is not so. Just as a snake sheds its skin, in some Jambudvipa, having abandoned another body of skillful means, he shows another body of skillful means. The Buddha said: Son of good family, therefore the Thus-Gone One is permanent. Son of good family, furthermore, for example, when a goldsmith melts gold from a gold mine, making it free from flaws, and then has a goldsmith make it into whatever beautiful ornaments he desires, he can make it just so. Likewise, the Thus-Gone One also, in the twenty-five existences, manifests forms of skillful means in whatever way he desires for those who are to be tamed, and liberates sentient beings. Therefore, the body of the Thus-Gone One is limitless and permanent. Son of good family, furthermore, for example, a mango tree or a jambu tree also changes according to the three seasons. Sometimes it sprouts buds like frog's eyes and puts forth new leaves. Sometimes the leaves flourish and the shade is cool. Sometimes the leaves fall like a dry tree. Does that mean those trees have died? Answer: Blessed One, it is not so. The Buddha said: Son of good family, just so, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha himself, also shows three kinds of bodies of skillful means in the three realms according to those who are to be tamed, such as showing birth, showing living and abiding, and showing complete nirvana. Does that mean the Thus-Gone One is impermanent? Answer: Blessed One, it is not so.
