This, remaining constant, stable, and enduring, yet not being stained by faults, is the Dharma-nature of the Buddhas. Son of good family, for example, it is neither the waxing moon nor the waning moon; on a clear day in the sky, when there is no sun or moon, a star called "Long-tailed Star with Fierce Radiance" appears, rising from the east, and before the whole world is aware of it, it disappears in a single moment. Son of good family, similarly, the Pratyekabuddhas also appear when the Buddhas do not reside in the world, like the appearance of a long-tailed star on a clear day in the sky, establishing countless billions of sentient beings in the sacred Dharma, and then disappear. And the long-tailed star is always there, but sentient beings cannot see it. Similarly, the Pratyekabuddhas are also always there, but sentient beings cannot see them; they manifest themselves and then disappear, and this is their Dharma-nature. Son of good family, just as when the sun rises, there are no more fireflies, so too, when this great Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra appears, even by merely hearing it, the accumulation of sins of those who have broken the root vows and committed the five heinous crimes will quickly disappear. Therefore, this great Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, this inconceivable realm, is immeasurable because it reveals the Tathāgatagarbha. Therefore, sons or daughters of good family should diligently strive to learn the knowledge of the sūtras, thinking that the Tathāgata is eternal, the sacred Dharma will not decline, and the Sangha will not disappear. If they do so, they too will live in the state of Buddhahood, just like me. Question: Blessed One, what are the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas like? The Buddha replied: Whether they have generated the mind of enlightenment or not, they will become Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas. Question: What is that like? The Buddha replied: Son of good family, just as butter frozen in winter cannot be melted even by the heat of the sun, so too, through the practice of all the sūtras and samādhis, by the power of the fruit of practice, those who have generated the mind of enlightenment...

Also, one will not attain enlightenment. Even without generating the mind, one will not attain enlightenment. Why is that? Because, like the winter sun, diligence is weak. The supreme fruit of meditating on the Sutra Pitaka is like the summer sun, when it is hot, even before the sun rises, the extremely cold butter of the night will melt, and the great ocean will also become warm. Similarly, any son or daughter of good family who, upon hearing this Great Nirvana Sutra, immediately engages in debate, causes others to do it, or has others transcribe it, or does it for the sake of gain, respect, and verses, even if they think they do not need enlightenment or do not wish to generate the mind of enlightenment, the cause of enlightenment will enter every pore of the body of such a person like the summer sun. Therefore, I say that those sons of good family are Bodhisattvas, great beings. Thus, this Great Sutra of Inexhaustible Enlightenment is a great accumulation of merit, therefore it is called "Great." It is early, vast, and glorious like the summer sun, therefore it is called "Great Nirvana." Why is that? Because in this, the Tathagata's essence is constantly taught. Furthermore, sons of good family, the light of stars and fireflies does not transcend the light of the sun and moon and appear clearly. The light of the sun and moon transcends all lights and remains bright. Similarly, other lights do not transcend the light of the Great Nirvana Sutra, which is obtained by meditating on all the Sutra Pitakas and all Samadhis, and remain clearly. The light of the Great Nirvana Sutra transcends all lights and appears clearly, and enters the pores of all sentient beings, and even if they think they do not need the mind of enlightenment and do not generate it, they will definitely obtain the cause of enlightenment, therefore it is also called "Great Nirvana." Question: Even if one clings to not needing the mind of enlightenment, sentient beings
