They will come to believe and understand. Why? Because they know that I possess the Tathagatagarbha. Having thoroughly understood permanence, they will also enter into it. Son of good family, just as all rivers converge into the ocean. Son of good family, similarly, all sutras, all samadhis, and the Mahayana converge into this Great Nirvana Sutra. Why? Because from this sutra, the Tathagatagarbha is most perfectly and clearly revealed. Whatever is supremely ultimate is called the cause. Therefore, some dharmas are impermanent, and some dharmas are permanent. (Question) It is said that the Buddha also experiences the pain of sorrow. The sorrow of the perfectly enlightened one is not like the sorrow of humans, nor like the sorrow of gods, nor like the sorrow of demons. The Buddha does not grieve even when reborn as an animal, so what is it like? (Answer) What is the thought of those without thought like? If there is no thought, then living is not reasonable, but those without thought are alive. How can those without skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas have thought? For example, gods reside in trees, but it is not apparent where those gods reside in the branches or roots of the trees. Similarly, the teachings are profound, and the Tathagata is profound. Just as when Rahu seizes the moon, the loving one constantly grieves, which is similar to the grief of the gods of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Those are the realms of the Buddhas, and the Buddhas are like that. What is the nature of the Buddhas' Dharma, what is their body like, what is the speech of the self-born ones like, and what is their mind like? Only the Buddhas know, where does sorrow exist in the nature of mind? If there is no sorrow, then it contradicts the great flourishing of the teachings. If it is said that there is no sorrow, then saying to look like Rahu seizing the moon becomes false. Saying that all dharmas are false is an inconceivable teaching. Similarly, the Tathagata, the Arhat,

Death, too, is inconceivable. Dharma, too, is inconceivable. The teachings, too, are inconceivable. Thus, the true nature of the Buddhas is such. As long as there is space, there is no dwelling, no pillar, no dust. Seeing that only the nature of space exists, those with the nature of children should completely transform their minds as space exists. In such inconceivability, where would there be sorrow? To say "look as if seized by Rahu" when there is no sorrow becomes meaningless. The sorrow of the Thus-Gone One is like space. Just as illusion has no other mind, to say that the Thus-Gone One has sorrow is merely an illusion. If one looks at complete liberation from sorrow, where would there be sorrow? Impermanence has sorrow, which arises from their minds. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One is permanent. If impermanence has sorrow, the Thus-Gone One is not impermanent, so it is impossible to understand whether there is sorrow and whether there is not. The Thus-Gone One is free from sorrow. The inferior knows the inferior, but the inferior does not know the intermediate. The intermediate knows the intermediate, but the intermediate does not know the superior. The superior knows the inferior, the intermediate, and the superior. Hearers and solitary Buddhas only know the master of their own realm. The Buddhas comprehend everything. Therefore, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas are said to have no obscurations of wisdom. Thus, in the realms of gods and on earth, various illusions are shown. Thus, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are understood to appear in accordance with the world, and therefore, in order for children with eyes of flesh to attain unobstructed wisdom, they should abide in the wisdom of the wise. Thus, sorrow and the absence of sorrow are measured by the perfect Buddha, not the realm of children. Therefore, some dharmas have self, and some dharmas have no self. This is shown as if with a net. Son of good family, furthermore, the realm of the Buddha is to walk amidst the laughter of birds.

It should be shown like this. For example, birds such as wagtails and ducks, when the rivers dry up in summer, in order to hatch their own eggs, they settle firmly on the sandbanks and go to where they should go, which is their nature. Similarly, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, after being born, also establishes countless beings in the true Dharma. Like wagtails and ducks, after the affairs of all those who are to be tamed are completed, they appear in other places where they should be tamed. Therefore, some dharmas are called suffering and some dharmas are called happiness. All formations are suffering and destruction. Nirvana is supreme happiness because it is free from formations and therefore possesses happiness. Questioner: What is that like? The Blessed One replied: Just as you said. Questioner: How can beings who have attained Nirvana attain happiness? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, what I have taught is that aging and death arise from formations. Mindfulness is the state of immortality, and heedlessness is the state of death. Those who are mindful do not change death, and those who are heedless are always like the dead. Those who are heedless are formations, which are extreme suffering. Nirvana is without death. Those who are heedless are formations, and they are extreme suffering. I declare that Nirvana is without death. Those who are mindful are not formations, and I declare that even though they enjoy formations, they have no aging, no death, and no destruction. So, who are those who are heedless? Who are those who are mindful? Worldly people are those who are heedless, like the dead. Those who are beyond the world have no aging and no death. Those who are mindful are those who have attained the supreme happiness of Nirvana. Therefore, some dharmas are suffering and some dharmas are
