When combined together, it becomes functional, therefore it is called half-letter. All tantras, all secret mantras, and all dharmas are terms combined with the latter letter, therefore one truly sees the Tathagata and liberation. Abandoning the notion of speaking and thinking about letters, as well as the notion of letters and seeds, is the Tathagata and liberation, therefore liberation is complete liberation and extreme liberation. The Tathagata appears solely for the meaning of the half-letter dharma, and those who have truly passed away are called knowers of letters. Others are called knowers of half-letters. What are those without letters? They are those who rely on non-dharma. Even if they rely on dharma, but believe that the Tathagata is permanent, the three natures, liberation is eternal, the sutras, non-sutras, the Vinaya, non-Vinaya, and cannot distinguish between what is spoken by demons and what is spoken by the Buddha, all these I say have no letters in their hearts. Son of lineage, therefore you should learn these half-letters, so that you may be counted among the knowers of letters. Question. Blessed One, I wish to be counted among them, therefore I wish to learn the half-letters. Blessed One, only now have I met such an excellent teacher as you. Blessed One, only now have I entered the realm of letters and calculations. The Buddha said. Son of lineage, good, good. Those who desire the holy dharma should desire it in this way. Son of lineage, the so-called "ཟལ་མོ་" are of two kinds, namely the "ཟལ་མོ་" of suffering, impermanence, and selflessness, and the "ཟལ་མོ་" accompanied by laughter, which is the meaning of what is to be done. Question. How are suffering, impermanence, and selflessness called "ཟལ་མོ་"? The Buddha said. Because some dharmas are impermanent, and some dharmas are permanent, some dharmas are suffering, and some dharmas are happiness, some dharmas are selfless, and some dharmas are

Because of having those. For example, sugarcane trees, rice, grains, barley, buckwheat, beans, lentils, peas, and so on, all kinds of grains, from the time of flowering to the time of fruiting, are included in the category of impermanence. Once the chaff is gone, it will benefit all sentient beings and be included in the ranks of grains, therefore it is called permanent. Why? Because it has become its nature. Question: World Honored One, what is the reason? Will those not change after they are gone? Those will not change after they are gone, so is the Thus-Gone One permanent? Answer: The Thus-Gone One can be compared to Mount Sumeru, but the king of mountains, Mount Sumeru, will also be destroyed by the destructive kalpa, so do not think of the Thus-Gone One in that way. Except for Nirvana, there is nothing in the world that will not be destroyed, so follow the conventional way of speaking in accordance with the world. Question: World Honored One, good, good. Answer: Son of good family, similarly, the result of practicing all sutras and all samadhis, this great Mahaparinirvana Sutra, before sentient beings have heard it, is included in the category of impermanence. After hearing this precious sutra, whether it is a son of good family or a daughter of good family, even if they have afflictions, they are included in the ranks of those without afflictions, and they can also benefit all sentient beings. Why? Because they know that they have the Tathagata-garbha. After thoroughly knowing permanence, they will also enter into it. Son of good family, again, for example, a mango tree or a palm tree, from the time of flowering to the time of fruiting, is included in the category of impermanent dharma. Once the fruit is ripe, it will benefit all sentient beings and be included in the ranks of permanent dharma. Son of good family, similarly, the result of practicing all sutras and all samadhis

This great Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, before sentient beings have heard it, belongs to the category of impermanence. After hearing this precious Sūtra, whether it is a son of good family or a daughter of good family, even if they are still afflicted, they belong to the category of non-affliction, and they will also benefit all sentient beings. Why is that? Because they know that they have the Tathāgatagarbha. After thoroughly knowing permanence, they will also enter into it. Son of good family, again, for example, a gold mine or a copper mine, before it is mined, belongs to the category of impermanence. When gravel, stones, and flaws are removed, it will benefit all sentient beings and belong to the category of permanent jewels.
