My body clearly possesses the Tathagatagarbha, yet it is only seen vaguely. For example, when people walk to and fro in the morning mist, children see them and think: Is that a cow? Is that a buffalo? Or is it a vulture? But eventually, they vaguely see that it is a child. Similarly, great Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhumis also only vaguely see that their own bodies clearly possess the Tathagatagarbha. For example, when a Bodhisattva image painted on a large canvas is displayed in the darkness of night, those with eyes will speculate: Is that a Buddha image? Or is it a red copper cloth? Or is it the image of Mahadeva or Brahma? But eventually, they vaguely see that it is a Bodhisattva image. Similarly, sons of good families, great Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhumis also only vaguely see that their own bodies clearly possess the Tathagatagarbha. Sons of good families, therefore, the Tathagatagarbha is extremely difficult to see, because it is the realm of the Tathagata, and not the realm of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Sons of good families, therefore, my teachings are to be understood by the wise, and are different from all the world. Question: If that is the case, how can those with flesh eyes see the subtle details? Answer: How do the gods of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception see? This is only the realm of the Buddhas themselves, and not the realm of all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas; they should generate faith by following this Sutra. By doing so, they will also become those with right view. Sons of good families, therefore, all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas should also, through the manner of this great Mahaparinirvana Sutra, believe that their bodies possess the Tathagatagarbha, and strive to be in accordance with the Sutras. The Tathagatagarbha is the realm of the Tathagata, and not the realm of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas.

It is not so. Reporting: World Honored One, are there also people who establish the realm of sentient beings for worldly people? Reply: Son of lineage, for example, two people are friends, one is the son of a king, and the other is a poor person. The two of them love each other and go to each other's homes to play. Then, the poor person saw the sword of the king's son, which had a good color, and the king's son took the sword and went to another place. After that, the poor man slept in a temple without support at night, and suddenly shouted: Sword, sword! His words were heard by the guards in the city, and they reported to the king. The king summoned the man and asked: Where did you come from, what kind of sword? He reported the situation at that time to the king, saying: God, if I stole it, please cut off my hands and feet. I only saw it when I was playing with my friend, but I didn't even touch it. After that, the king said to him: What is the shape and color of that sword? He reported to the king: God, that sword is like a ram's horn. After that, the king let the man go and said: Do not be afraid, do not be afraid! Go quickly and happily! You may have seen that sword in this palace of the king before, the king's son found it when he was doing business in his own country, and it is difficult for the king to find it. After that, the king asked the attendants and ministers: Have you seen that sword? Then he died. Others also searched for the sword, but did not find it. After that, another son of the king was made king, and he found the sword. Others did not find it, but became king. Like this, the kings who passed down from generation to generation have not seen the sword. They just guess that the sword is like this, like a ram's horn, like a goat's horn. Some people guess at will, just like this, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas also appear in the world like the sons of kings in border areas.

E! I will die after teaching the truth of suchness. Then those who are narrow-minded will think that all sentient beings have a "self" like me. They misunderstand and preach to those without wisdom as if in a dream. Those worldly people, upon hearing this, will also think that there is a realm of "self" in their bodies. But they do not understand the nature of that "self." Thus, after hearing the words of a Bodhisattva, they develop wrong views, imagining all sorts of things, like imagining a curved sword. Worldly people wrongly think that a person the size of a thumb, or like the fruit of the Shama tree, or like a grain of rice, dwells in the heart and burns. Their views are passed down from one wrong view to another, bringing no benefit or happiness. Therefore, I have taught non-self. However, worldly people still wrongly think that there is a "self." Son of good family, therefore, now I will speak of the Tathagatagarbha, which is like a sharp sword in my teachings, explaining that "self" is like this. Whatever is well-spoken and in accordance with the Dharma, even if spoken by worldly people, should be known to be beyond the worldly. Among worldly people, in all aspects, the most excellent Dharma should be known to be the emanation of a Bodhisattva. Whether it is a treatise, a mantra, or a secret mantra, all of these should be known to be spoken by the fully enlightened Buddha. Question: How did the Blessed One teach the Mother of Letters? The Blessed One taught: All the Mothers of Letters are initially emanated from half-letters. These Mothers become mantras, secret mantras, the truth of the Dharma, and the dharanis of all aggregates. Therefore, studying the principles of the Holy Dharma, the Mother of Letters, one can distinguish between Dharma and non-Dharma, so I emanate them, not because they are non-Dharma. Question: What is the meaning of "letters"? Answer: The fourteen sounds are called letters.
