Therefore, speaking from the aspect of merit, just as the snow mountain has poison, but mainly medicine is spoken of, this body is also similar to it. Although it possesses the four poisons like venomous snakes, because there is the Tathagata-garbha, the king of medicine, the Tathagata-garbha is from the beginning a nature that is not artificial, and afflictions arise suddenly. Whoever wishes to become a Buddha should destroy the forms of afflictions. For example, if thunder sounds in the sky, mushrooms will grow rapidly, but in spring, there is not even the name of mushrooms. Just as thunder appears, the Tathagata-garbha is also obscured by the forms of afflictions, so it appears as if there is no self. Whoever hears this great sutra, as soon as they hear this Great Nirvana Sutra, like mushrooms, the knowledge of the Tathagata-garbha will arise. All sutras and all samadhis are like springtime, and hearing all sutras and all samadhis, one cannot truly know that the Tathagata-garbha exists. Just as mushrooms grow in the summer sky, all the secret meanings of contemplation arise from this Great Nirvana Sutra. As soon as one hears this sutra, just as mushrooms grow in the summer sky, all sentient beings will truly know that the Tathagata-garbha exists. Because it expands the great meaning, it is called the Great Nirvana. Whoever studies this Great Nirvana Sutra is repaying my kindness. Question: O Blessed One, the Tathagata-garbha is extremely difficult for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to see, extremely difficult to understand, and extremely difficult to endure. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, it is so. Son of good family, it is so, I also say the same. Question: How is it difficult to see? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, for example, there are a hundred blind people.

Those people, wanting to see with their eyes, sought a great eye doctor. The doctor examined their eyes, cleared the cataracts from their eyes, and then extended one finger, saying to each of them: 'Hey, look at my finger, and you will know whether your eyes are healed or not.' After the examination was completed, no matter how he pointed his finger, those people could not see it. He pointed it out two or three times, but they still could not see it. Similarly, sons of good family, the great Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, even after performing all the examinations of complete purification, are like those people. Even after such complete purification, they are like those people. I point out to them two or three times that they have the Tathagatagarbha, but they still cannot see it. If they do see it, they say: 'We have also been completely surrounded by the wheel of selflessness for this long, and the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas hope to see it.' Sons of good family, in that case, entering the sutra of my realm is difficult to see. Sons of good family, furthermore, for example, someone sees a swan stretching its wings and flying in the sky. After seeing it like that, he becomes doubtful, thinking: 'Is this the sky, or is it a swan flying?' After careful observation, he vaguely sees that it is a swan flying. Similarly, the great Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhumis also think that they vaguely see that they have the Tathagatagarbha, and all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas hope to see it. For example, someone is walking on the road, and because of bile disorder, he loses his way. After careful observation, he vaguely sees the road and the shape. Similarly, the great Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, after careful observation, vaguely see that there is a realm in their own body that is not the Tathagatagarbha. For example, a certain guest, tormented by thirst, cannot find water in a deserted place, and while longing for water, he sees birds perched on the branches...

Is this a pavilion? Or is it thought to be the sky, but upon closer inspection, it is like vaguely seeing it as a bird's nest. Sons of the lineage, even the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, although they possess the Tathagatagarbha within themselves, merely vaguely see that it exists. Sons of the lineage, for example, a person on a ship at sea, seeing a white pavilion in a city from many yojanas away, thinks to himself: Is this the sky? Or is it a pavilion? Upon closer inspection, it is like vaguely seeing it, so too, the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, although they possess the Buddha-nature within themselves, merely vaguely see that it exists. Sons of the lineage, for example, a happy young prince, waking up in the morning, rising from watching a musical performance, his eyes dazzled by the sunlight, upon closer inspection, it is like vaguely seeing his own belt. The Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, merely vaguely see that they possess the Buddha-nature within themselves. For example, a certain royal attendant, on a dark night thick with clouds, coming out of the royal palace to go to his own home, in the moment of lightning, seeing a herd of cows coming from ahead, thinks to himself: Is this a cloud? Or a house? A gatehouse? Or a building? Upon closer inspection, it is like vaguely seeing it, so too, the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, although they possess the Buddha-nature within themselves, merely vaguely think that the Tathagatagarbha exists within their own bodies. For example, a certain monk who reveres upholding the precepts, in water without living beings, sees with his own mind that there are living beings, thinking to himself: Is this a living being? Or dust? Or suddenly appearing dust? Or some kind of living being? Upon closer inspection, it is like vaguely seeing it, so too, the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, also
