The head is not separate from the body, the hands are not separate, and the feet are not separate. Similarly, the Buddha is not separate, the Dharma is not separate, and the Sangha is not separate. However, distinguishing them is to guide children definitively, like showing a staircase. In the true nature of the Dharma, do not view the three as separate. Do not cling to words that, like children, make one ignorant. Sharpen your mind like the sword of Urmo. Be endowed with great wisdom. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Great Protector, of the same lineage as the Blessed One, spoke thus: Great Hero, Blessed One, even in confusion, I request that you explain the stainless conduct of a Bodhisattva. Blessed One, please teach well the conduct of a Bodhisattva, the great Mahayana, the unsurpassed, the exceedingly vast, like the sword of Urmo. Ah, well done! Having heard the explanation of the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I will also teach it to all beings. Whichever being, in order to realize the Tathagatagarbha, has faith in this sutra, they themselves are the Three Refuges. Therefore, they take refuge in themselves and do not need the other three bases. Why? Because there is the Tathagatagarbha, there is the Buddha-nature. After careful consideration, I will say that there is Buddha-nature in my body. If they understand this way, they will not take refuge in the Three Jewels either, because they themselves have become the refuge of the Dharma and the Sangha, and are the object of constant worship by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Therefore, I will begin to practice the Mahayana. In this way, the Buddha-nature, the thirty-two marks, and the eighty minor marks are inconceivable. The Blessed One said: Well done! Well done! Those with sharp wisdom should do this. Son of the lineage, I will now speak of another way to enter the Tathagatagarbha.

It should be distinguished thus. If the self (ātman, आत्मन्) is stable and real, then suffering will not have an end. If there is no self (anātman, अनात्मन्), then all pure conduct will become meaningless. If all dharmas are without self, then one will fall into nihilistic views; if the self is stable, then one will fall into eternalistic views. If all dharmas are impermanent, then one will fall into nihilistic views; if all dharmas are permanent, then one will fall into eternalistic views. If all dharmas are inherently suffering, then one will fall into nihilistic views; if all dharmas are happiness, then one will fall into eternalistic views. If one meditates on everything as permanent, then one will grasp at annihilation; if one meditates on everything as annihilated, then one will quickly grasp at permanence. For example, just as lotus worms quickly devour people's heads and quickly abandon one place for another, similarly, if one meditates on permanence, then by grasping at everything, one will become like a lotus worm. Therefore, for other non-virtuous dharmas, one should meditate on suffering; for other virtuous dharmas, one should meditate on happiness; for the aspects of afflictions and other dharmas, one should meditate on no-self; for nirvana, because there is no basis or place, and for the tathāgatagarbha and other dharmas, one should meditate on self; for enjoyment and other dharmas, one should meditate on impermanence; for the dharmas of the tathāgata and other dharmas, one should meditate on permanence. The three seals and the suchness of liberation are not like the lotus worm eating. Know that the Buddha's teachings are this Middle Way. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, taught the Middle Way, which abandons the extremes of nihilism and eternalism. Foolish people are confused about the Buddha's teachings, and like those with weak digestive fire who eat too much butter, they quickly fall into two extremes. Saying "exists" is not established, and saying "does not exist" is also not reasonable. For example, doctors, even though the elements such as bile are disturbed and become incompatible with each other, they pacify bile for bile diseases, eliminate wind for wind-dominant diseases, eliminate phlegm for those with phlegm, and counteract the combination for combined diseases.
