Because of attachment, monks, you should meditate on all dharmas as being without self. By meditating in this way, you will abandon self-grasping. If you completely abandon self-grasping, you will attain nirvana. Just as a child's mother smears her breast with neem leaf juice, so too, I will have you meditate on all dharmas as being without self, meditate on emptiness. Just as that child's mother later washes her breast and says to the child, 'Before, I didn't let you suckle because I didn't want you to have indigestion, but now you can suckle,' so too, I taught that way in order to transform worldly dharmas, saying 'no-self,' but now I will show that I have the Tathagatagarbha. Monks, do not be afraid like children, just as that child examines and then suckles the mother's breast again, so too, monks, you should also examine whether we have the Tathagatagarbha, and then diligently practice meditation, now it has been shown. The questioner said: A newborn child has little knowledge and no understanding, it is not appropriate to use this to clarify the meaning. If there is a self, then it should have knowledge and wisdom. If knowledge is weak, then it is also not appropriate to clarify the meaning, so there is no self. Why is that? If the self is permanent, then after birth it will die. If the Tathagatagarbha is permanent, then various differences will also appear on it, such as Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras, Chandalas, and the various differences arising from the karma of being born as animals. If there is a self, then the self without difference should be equal, in that case it should not have a realm. If there is a realm, then why enter the paths of the ten non-virtuous actions such as killing, stealing the property of others, and sexual misconduct? Why become intoxicated after drinking alcohol? If the realm of sentient beings is permanent, then the deaf should also be able to hear with their ears, and the blind should also be able to see.

It is also the kind that makes the dumb become eloquent. If I say that the nature of sentient beings is permanent, then where in me do the collections of phlegm, mucus, blue, and yellow reside? And where do I reside in relation to them? Or do I exist everywhere like moisture? If that is the case, then in the battlefield, if a person's ears and nose are cut off, will my limbs also be damaged or become crippled? The Buddha said: Son of good family, for example, a warrior of a certain king wears a precious diamond on his forehead between his eyebrows. This warrior competes in strength with another warrior. The two of them compete according to the rules. One warrior's head strikes the other warrior's forehead, causing the ornament between the eyebrows to sink inward. That warrior did not notice and thought: Where did I put the diamond? So he called a doctor to treat the wound. That doctor was very clever and quick-witted. He thought: This wound must have been caused by that gem, and the diamond must have sunk into the forehead. So he asked the warrior: Hey, man, where did your gem go? That warrior said to the doctor: Alas, doctor, the diamond ornament between my eyebrows is gone. Alas, did I put it in the box? Or where did I put it? I don't know, even if I look in the box, I can't find it. Alas, has it disappeared? Has it disappeared like a water bubble? Or has it disappeared like an illusion? Then the doctor said to him: Hey, man, don't be so sad. Your diamond has sunk into the wound and is shining in the flesh, blood, and pus. You were just too focused on competing in strength to notice. The doctor said that, but he didn't believe it. If that's the case, why didn't it come out with the pus and blood? Or is it blocked by water? Don't say that. He said that to the doctor. Then the doctor took out the diamond and showed it to him. He was very surprised to see it. Similarly, all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, but sentient beings do not

Knowing the faults of relying on bad friends, and being oppressed by desire, hatred, and ignorance, sentient beings will be born in sentient hells, as animals, hungry ghosts, asuras, Chandalas, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Jews, and commoners. Due to the power of my sins, and the ignorance of desire, hatred, and ignorance, sentient beings will become foolish, deaf, blind, crippled, hunchbacked, stained with various impurities, with yellow eyes, like the color of lentils, like the color of Kurantaka flowers, with reddish-yellow eyes, and will transform into various forms in the twenty-five existences. Just as a giant possesses a vajra on his body but, due to loss of consciousness, thinks it is lost, so worldly sentient beings do not understand my true nature, are controlled by bad friends, do not understand the words of secret meaning, and although they have a self, they meditate on no-self. Those who do not meditate on no-self meditate on the worldly self. Just as they think there is a worldly self, not understanding my true nature, just like worldly phenomena, relying on bad friends, not understanding the ultimate meaning of secret words, while meditating on no-self, no-self, they do not understand the true nature of no-self. Where do I exist? Where do I reside? Is it like a vase inside a vase? Or is it pervasive like moisture? Is it like the ignorant brow ornament of a giant? Like a doctor, the Tathagata says to them: I do not reside in all places, but am luminous like a precious vajra, obscured by the forms of afflictions. After saying this, sentient beings will believe, and it is only necessary to exhaust the afflictions. Then, like a vajra, the Tathagatagarbha will be seen. Son of good family, thus the Tathagatagarbha is inconceivable. Furthermore, son of good family, for example, on a snow mountain there is the essence of bees.
