Even if it has been said, a wise layperson should not prostrate to them, nor should they be regarded as objects of offering. If you wish to prostrate to them, ask, 'Do you accept the eight major foundations?' Or ask, 'Do you not accept?' Only then prostrate. To those who accept, ask, 'Do you perform the karma and Uposatha practices together with those who accept?' If they say, 'We accept the eight major foundations of the Sangha, because the Blessed One, out of compassion for all beings, also accepted gold and silver in Prince Jeta's Grove.' Some among them do not accept, 'We do not perform karma, Uposatha, or the act of subduing with folded hands together with those who accept. We do not drink soup, nor do we accept gains and respect from them.' They say, 'If even the Buddha, the god of gods, accepts, what is intolerable about the Sangha accepting?' Even if they say this, say, 'You have not performed karma, Uposatha, or the act of subduing with folded hands together with them, have you?' If those who do not listen are knowers of the true Sutras. Those who accept are like children, and it should be known that they are hell beings, and those beings are like dead children. Son of good family, for example, in a large city's spice market, merchants sell frankincense and other kinds of spices and medicines. There, the beings who buy do not know what medicine from the snowy mountains is like, so they ask them, 'If there is a little bit like frankincense from the snowy mountains, please give it to me.' Then, they give what is disguised as spice from the snowy mountains as if it were spice from the snowy mountains, and those people truly believe that it is spice from the snowy mountains, accepting the fake spices in the same way. Whether they are immoral or moral, to them, these are the true Shravaka Sangha.

These are the true Sangha. Thinking, "These are the harmonious Sangha," a layperson with the eye of flesh should prostrate to them and also give offerings. A layperson with the eye of flesh finds it difficult to distinguish between genuine and counterfeit in the spice market, just like medicine from the snowy mountains. Similarly, without the divine eye, one cannot differentiate, just like medicine from the snowy mountains, one cannot distinguish, "This one is virtuous, this one is immoral, these Sanghas are free from the eight root downfalls." Virtue and immorality are the realm of those with the divine eye, not the realm of those with the eye of flesh. If impurity is seen, then until the confessable offenses that have occurred are confessed, one should not prostrate to them, nor should one give offerings. To the Sanghas who have taken the eight root downfalls, until they have confessed their own confessable offenses, and have not become pure like medicine from the snowy mountains, do not trust them merely because they wear colored robes, do not prostrate to them, nor should you give offerings to them. The petitioner said: Blessed One, well said! Well said! The Blessed One's teachings are well spoken, like a vajra jewel, I wish to wear it on my head. To this, the Blessed One said: Monks, these four are reliances, which four? Monks, your reliance is the nature of Dharma, not a person. Monks, your reliance is the definitive meaning, not the provisional meaning. Monks, your reliance is wisdom, not consciousness. Monks, your reliance is meaning, not letters. These four that we rely on are valid cognitions, but these four types of persons are not valid cognitions, Blessed One, you have spoken well. The Blessed One taught: What is called the nature of Dharma is the complete Nirvana of the Tathagata. The Tathagata is permanent, stable, and real, this is the nature of Dharma of all Buddhas. That

Those who see the Tathagata as impermanent, I say they do not understand the nature of reality. I say they are individuals. I say they are not valid cognizers. The four individuals who are not those are valid cognizers. The four individuals are those who are skilled in the words of hidden meaning, who know the secret reality of the Tathagata, and who know that it is permanent. It is impossible for them to even conceive of the Tathagata as impermanent. Those four individuals are the Tathagata himself, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha. Any other sentient beings, those individuals who are skilled in all the words of hidden meaning that say the Tathagata is permanent, I say they are also valid cognizers and a source of reliance. If those four are not a source of reliance, then what is? Monks, your source of reliance is the nature of reality, and the meaning of what is called the direct perception of the Shravakas, and do not forget the meaning of the nature of reality. The nature of reality means that one should strive for the Tathagata to be permanent, and not strive for the individual. If some individuals who are immoral and greedy for gain say that the Tathagata is impermanent, then those individuals are not valid cognizers, that is the meaning. Monks, your source of reliance is the definitive meaning, not the provisional meaning. The definitive meaning means the Great Vehicle. Hearing the words of hidden meaning, the secret of the Tathagata, because there is no fault of doubt, it is called definitive, it is the meaning of transcending the great ocean of wisdom, and arising from it. The definitive wisdom, the Great Vehicle, means unobstructed wisdom. Obstructed wisdom is the vehicle of the Shravakas. The definitive wisdom is called great wisdom and the Great Vehicle. Those Bodhisattvas who truly understand that the Tathagata is permanent, those are the determiners, therefore the words of the Bodhisattvas are valid cognizers, but the provisional meaning is not like that. The Tathagata is a body of flesh, and just like a fire that is extinguished when the wood is consumed, he has completely passed into Nirvana, this is only the view of the Shravakas.
