If you wish to become brave, walk upon the edge of a sword! Whenever you fight, be fearless! Whether it be gods or fierce ones, regard them as mere grass! Strive for courage and boldness! Some wicked fellows transform themselves into the guise of warriors, taking up the weapons of warriors, drawing the Urmo sword from its sheath, and coming as if grinding flour, striking sword against sword, causing sparks to fly. If you see such ones shouting and coming into the marketplace, do not flee! Those wicked fellows, seeing them and thinking, "These are warriors!" will scatter like dog thieves. And those who are good fellows will shrink back, fearing shame. Just as those wicked fellows flee in fear, so too the Thus-Gone-One teaches the Hearers' Vehicle practitioners to be brave, teaching them not to fear you wicked demons and cowardly villains, but to cultivate boldness as if learning bravery, so that the demons will become displeased. Noble son, furthermore, some great warrior or son of a warrior, without having been taught bravery by anyone, even without a teacher, is naturally brave, and the noble son who has become religious is brave in accordance with the cause of his own brave lineage. Likewise, a Mahayana practitioner, whether male, female, boy, or girl, if they contemplate and hear the various words of the sutras that have been spoken, those who are not afraid or alarmed are those who have served many Buddhas in the past. Therefore, they understand this Great Vehicle and develop faith. Even if they see demons or countless demons, Mahayana practitioners will not be afraid, nor will they find it at all strange. For example, just as a snake charmer, through the power of medicine and mantras, renders the venom of poisonous snakes harmless and is therefore unafraid of them, so too countless demons will become powerless through the splendor and power of the mantras in the words of the Great Vehicle sutras. Noble son, furthermore, some great warrior or son of a warrior...

My venomous serpent kings, even elephants, tigers, leopards, and dogs are frightened by just a glance, some even dying as a result. Some, fearing death, will flee at the mere sound of it. Some people ride on venomous serpent kings, garudas, elephants, lions, and tigers, wandering everywhere. Some people, upon seeing dragons, garudas, lions, and rakshasas, become fearless, just like those timid people, shravakas and pratyekabuddhas become frightened upon seeing demons, but the demons are not afraid of them, and even do the work of demons. Mahayana practitioners ride on demons, taming their great majesty, great power, and courage, and then teach the Dharma. Powerful demons like dragons become frightened and immediately become fond of the sacred Dharma, and say: From now on, we will no longer obstruct the sacred Dharma. Shravaka practitioners are frightened by the forms of afflictions. Mahayana practitioners consider afflictions to be insignificant. Therefore, Mahayana practitioners are brave. Therefore, the reason stated earlier is this. I have shown the subduing of demons for the sake of the shravaka practitioners. Therefore, the Great Nirvana Sutra is extremely difficult to endure. Alas! If anyone who hears this great sutra and the saying "The Tathagata is eternal" believes it, that is extremely rare, as rare as the udumbara flower in the world. After my parinirvana, this great sutra will become very difficult to obtain. In the future, those beings who strive to hear this great sutra will be abandoned by many beings. Question: For how long will beings abandon it? What kind of beings will propagate the sacred Dharma? The Buddha said: Son of good family, after my parinirvana, this sutra will be practiced in Jambudvipa for four thousand years, and after that...

It will sink below Lhasa. Son of good family, for example, in any place where there is an abundance of sugarcane, rice, grains, honey, sugar, cow's milk, and the essence of butter, there are also other sentient beings who are inferior due to the ripening of karma and have not accumulated merit. They will say, "The elements of our body will become ill if we eat good food." So they eat barnyard millet, barley, and buckwheat. In that same place, there are others who do not even want to hear the names of barnyard millet, barley, and buckwheat, and only eat sugarcane, rice, and grains. Similarly, this great sutra of the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, there are also some sentient beings who do not want to hear it. Just as those who have not accumulated merit eat barnyard millet, barley, and buckwheat, and hate sugarcane and rice, so too will the Hearers of the Hearer Vehicle hate the Great Vehicle. Others who hear this and accumulate merit will become practitioners of the Great Vehicle. Son of good family, for example, the kings who live in remote mountainous and bad lands, even if they have sugarcane and rice, they will think that these grains are scarce and fear that they will run out, so they do not eat them themselves, but eat barnyard millet, barley, and buckwheat, and fill carts with sugarcane, rice, and grains to offer to the great king. In this way, other sentient beings, even if they have never seen rice and so on in their own country, can eat it by virtue of the king's enjoyment. Son of good family, similarly, wherever there are those four people who act as Dharma masters, whenever a Bodhisattva Mahasattva appears in the world, or wherever he lives, for his sake, those people will hire others with rewards to inquire about and transcribe the sections of the Great Vehicle sutras, put them in book boxes, and honor them for the sake of gain and respect, or for the sake of practice, or for the sake of establishing a support for offering. They will attend to that Bodhisattva Mahasattva and lead many people into the Great Vehicle.
