It is not a view, but what is it that is naturally endowed with the characteristic of being free from attachment, hatred, and ignorance? That is liberation. What is liberation? That is the Tathagata. Subduing thirst, subduing thirst means having not even a trace of craving for anything. The absence of craving for pretas is craving for the Dharma. Craving for the Dharma means having compassion for all sentient beings. Liberation is not like the craving of pretas, but it is liberation because it is free from the clinging to self and what belongs to self. What is liberation? That is the Tathagata. Cessation, cessation means liberation, which is non-attachment to existence. What is liberation? That is the Tathagata. Abode, abode means liberation, which is definitely liberating and protecting from all existence. What is liberation? That is the Tathagata. Refuge, refuge means just as after taking refuge in the Tathagata, one does not seek other refuges. Just as taking refuge in a king is not stable, liberation is not like that, stable happiness is liberation. What is liberation? That is the Tathagata. Friend, friend means just as in the depths of the forest, in a solitary place, one feels extreme fear, liberation is not like that. Just as the friend of the king of beasts is something that other beasts do not have. The king of beasts is not afraid of all the fears of death, similarly, liberation is a friend. What is liberation? That is the Tathagata. Happiness, happiness is like a jewel island, similarly, liberation is the source of Dharma. What is liberation? That is the Tathagata. Fearlessness, fearlessness means just as one is frightened and terrified by a tiger and falls into a well, and then says, "Who can get me out of this well?" liberation is not like a well. Fearlessness means just as one finds another ship from a shipwreck and definitely crosses the great ocean, becoming fearless and happy, liberation is fearlessness. What is liberation? As butter essence comes from churned butter, churned butter comes from clarified butter, clarified butter comes from fresh butter, and fresh butter comes from yogurt, so liberation is the complete cessation of all abodes, abiding in its own nature like the essence of butter. That which is liberation is the Tathagata. Taming pride: Taming pride means that liberation is not like a king, the lord of the earth, who subdues pride by thinking, "I am the best of all kings." Liberation is without pride and without clinging to pride. That which is liberation is the Tathagata. Taming arrogance: Taming arrogance means that liberation is that in which there is not even the name of the desire for intercourse. That which is liberation is the Tathagata. Taming ignorance: Taming ignorance means that just as from milk, as it passes from one stage to another, whatever faults of impurity are exhausted, from that only the essence of butter arises, so from ignorance only wisdom arises. That which is ignorance is liberation. That which is liberation is the Tathagata. Seclusion: Seclusion means that in which there is no other dualistic dharma. Just as in an elephant's hermitage, an elephant wanders alone and dwells alone, so is liberation. That which is liberation is the Tathagata. Complete abandonment: Complete abandonment means that the absence of self is taught to be grasped, and that is entering into the essence of the Tathagata. Just as the castor oil plant and the reed stalk have no essence from top to bottom except for the fruit, so all the bodies of gods, humans, and asuras have no essence like the castor oil plant and the reed except for the essence of the Tathagata. Liberation is the complete abandonment of all existence without essence. Liberation is self-explanatory. That which is liberation is the Tathagata. Abandonment: Abandonment means cutting off and abandoning all existence, just as one abandons undigested or uncooked food. Thus, liberation is wisdom. That which is liberation is the Tathagata. The Dharma of a Pratyekabuddha: The Dharma of a Pratyekabuddha means that just as the flower of a dragon tree is not a kidney flower,
