It is cut off for the sake of restraint. Question: Blessed One, based on what do you say that eating meat and fish is also good food? Answer: I have not said that meat and fish are good food, but I have said that sugarcane, rice, grains, wheat, barley, beans, peas, etc., as well as curd, rock candy, honey, butter, milk, and oil cakes are good food. I have said that for the sake of covering the body, various clothes should also be changed to bad colors. If this is taught, what need is there to mention attachment to the taste of eating meat? Question: If that is the case, then the five essences of a cow, sesame, oil cakes, tree sap, conch shells, fine silk, etc., should also be included in the precepts. Answer: Do not hold the view of the naked ascetics! I will establish other perceptions as the basis for you to learn now, and even meat in three situations is not allowed to be eaten. That which is done for a certain purpose, that which you understand must also be restrained. Meat other than the ten types of meat must also be abandoned. Dead meat must also be abandoned. A meat-eater, whether walking or sitting, all beings smell his scent and are afraid of him. For example, if a person eats garlic or onions, people's minds will become distrustful and discordant, and in a gathering of many people, beings will know that so-and-so has eaten meat. Similarly, all beings know the meat-eater, and they smell the scent and are afraid of the fear of death. When that person walks, the beings living in the water, on land, and in the sky are afraid, thinking: He will come to kill us, and then they panic and die. For these reasons, Bodhisattvas, great Bodhisattvas, do not eat meat. For the sake of taming beings, they may sometimes show the appearance of eating meat, but if they do not even eat ordinary food, what need is there to mention meat? Son of good family, after my Nirvana, after many hundreds of years, the Stream-enterers, Once-returners, Non-returners, and Arhats will no longer exist, and when the true Dharma is destroyed, some monks will not keep the precepts, hold on to the Matrika, have various thoughts, and eat various kinds of meat in order to nourish their own bodies.

Those will destroy the Vinaya I have established, and the rituals, and the way of having conduct, and liberation from attachment to inappropriate things, the true words of liberation, from the Vinaya and, Sutras, each will modify and speak as they please, like this, from our Vinaya, the Blessed One said that the offering of the essence of meat is permissible. Monastics of the Shakya clan will arbitrarily fabricate and speak contradictory things will appear. Answer: Son of good family, by all means, subdue.
