It shows various complete extinctions, therefore it is called the Great Nirvana. A son of good family or a daughter of good family who wishes to pass into extinction through this Great Nirvana should strive for the statement that "the Tathagata, the Dharma, and the Sangha are eternal." A son of good family or a daughter of good family who wishes to practice the practice of the Great Nirvana should strive for the statement that "the Tathagata is eternal." The petitioner said: How wonderful! World Honored One, the Tathagata is inconceivable. The teaching of the Dharma is inconceivable. The Sangha, endowed with a collection of virtues, is inconceivable. Similarly, this Great Nirvana Sutra is also inconceivable. Those who act according to the teachings of this sutra are beings with correct views. They are like stupas. Others should feel sorrow, they dwell in the silence of ignorance. This is called the third chapter, the reason for the name of the sutra and the principle of the qualities. Son of good family, with regard to this, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas show four kinds of Dharma categories from the Great Nirvana Sutra. What are the four kinds of Dharma categories? They are: one's own superior intention, the superior intention of others, the freedom to ask questions, and the freedom arising from the object of meaning. These four are those. Among them, one's own superior intention refers to the Tathagata observing whom and teaching the Dharma for them. For example, seeing a pile of burning firewood appearing bright, (the Tathagata thinks) monks, if someone hears various secrets from the Tathagata, they say to others, "This is spoken by the demon," and for various self-made words, they say, "This is spoken by the Tathagata," and say that the Buddha, the World Honored One, and the Sangha are impermanent, then it is easier to touch and embrace this burning pile of firewood. Those who say, "This is spoken by the demon," and those who hold to the reversed Dharma are speaking falsely.

It is better to die by touching a burning pile of wood with one's tongue than to hear the evil words of saying, "The Tathagata is impermanent." Those who cannot understand "The Tathagata is permanent" should be mourned. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is inconceivable. Similarly, one should consider his teachings and the Sangha of Hearers as inconceivable. Starting with "burning pile of wood," all of these are categories of one's own superior intention. The so-called superior intention of others refers to when the Bhagavan was teaching the Dharma, a young woman who had just given birth to a child came to the Bhagavan, sat to one side, and contemplated. Then, the Bhagavan understood her thoughts and began to teach the Dharma. For example, a mother who is skilled in treating her child with loving-kindness knows the temperature that the child can bear, and uses her fingertip to let her young son lick melted butter. The Bhagavan spoke thus. Then, the woman said, 'Alas, the Bhagavan understood my thoughts and spoke without omission, just as if he were teaching me. Bhagavan, today I gave my child melted butter with my fingertip, but he could not digest it. Bhagavan, what is the reason? Will my child live long? Or will he have a short life? Please, Bhagavan Tathagata, explain.' The Bhagavan replied, 'Your child will be healthy and live long.' Then, the woman was pleased and said, 'Your truthful words make me very happy.' In this way, the Tathagata observes the faculties of those to be tamed, and in conjunction with the ability to accept and not accept, teaches that all dharmas are without self and are suffering. If the Bhagavan did not combine the great and small capacities of beings and directly revealed the secret of permanence to them, then beings would become uncomfortable, like melted butter that cannot be digested.' The Bhagavan replied, 'Excellent, excellent! Daughter of good family, that is how it should be.'

Dress. Great virtue, furthermore, when your child is able to take steps, whatever oily food is given, they will be able to digest it. World Honored One, it is not so. The Buddha said: Is it that the initial food will be satisfying? Answer: World Honored One, it is not so. The Buddha said: Great virtue, similarly, when my hearers eat little like small children, I, like ghee, teach for the sake of suffering, impermanence, emptiness, and selflessness. When your child, like being born, becomes a great hearer, their strength increases, and they desire the Great Vehicle, then I also, like a great food with six tastes, teach the Great Nirvana Sutra. What are those six tastes? The sourness of suffering, the saltiness of impermanence, the spiciness of selflessness, the sweetness of happiness, the astringency of self, and the bitterness of permanence. These six tastes, food cooked with the firewood of afflictions and the fire of illusion, the delicious treat of the Suchness of Great Nirvana, my hearers will eat. Great virtue, again, for example, when you are summoned by others, or want to go to another village to tie up someone else's hair, will you abandon the bad children, take the good children, and show the secret treasures? World Honored One, it is not so. Bad children have no rules, are not heirs to wealth, I will not show them wealth. I will show it to good children, who can protect the family business, can accomplish family affairs, and are suitable to show property. The Buddha said: Great virtue, similarly, when doing the work of entering Great Nirvana, the Thus Come One will show all the secret words of intention to the hearers, and there give faith to the Buddha's sons. Great virtue, for example, when you go far away, will the bad children think that you are dead before you die? World Honored One, it is not so. The Buddha said: Then when you come back, they see you, similarly, great virtue, thinking that I am impermanent.
