(Light Increaser) asked: If the Tathagata speaks like that, then it is not right to regard all sentient beings as being swallowed by Rahu. If even names like teak and sandalwood disappear, then how should those who slander the true Dharma be punished? Is it permissible for the Tathagata to do so? The Blessed One said: Light Increaser, for example, someone of the same family, such as a householder, or a merchant, or a tribal chief, or a minister, or even a king, entrusts his beloved and cherished sons, who are extremely beautiful and have perfect physical forms, to a teacher, and then says to the teacher: I entrust these sons of mine to you so that they may be disciplined and learn rituals, conduct, and knowledge. You should discipline these children and teach them rituals, conduct, and knowledge! Teach them the Dharma! If, out of these four sons of mine, three die from beating, intimidation, and punishment, and one remains alive, and one learns, then even if three die, it is worthwhile. Three die, and one learns, then does the teacher commit sinful and unwholesome deeds? Blessed One, no. For him, in either case, it does not become a sinful deed. Why is that? Because he has no intention of resentment. If he does so, he will increase much merit. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, similarly, the Tathagata regards sentient beings who slander the true Dharma as being swallowed by Rahu, and just as he entrusts sons to a teacher, he also entrusts them to kings, ministers, and lay practitioners. Then, if the kings, ministers, and lay practitioners punish those distracted children, will the Tathagata have sinful deeds because of that? Blessed One, no. The kings, ministers, and lay practitioners will not have sinful deeds either. The Tathagata is without defilement, how could he be defiled? In order to protect their own merits and conduct, even if unwillingly

has also been cut off. The Blessed One declared: Thus, it is to cultivate the perception of a single child. Those who cultivate in this way will cultivate the perception of a single child. Therefore, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should cultivate the perception of a single child towards all sentient beings. By doing so, they will have cultivated the meditation of samadhi towards all sentient beings. Therefore, they will become supremely harmless and pure. Therefore, Bodhisattvas will be long-lived, extremely long-lived, and will remember their past lives. Mahakashyapa and the one with the lineage asked: If one cultivates the perception of a single child towards all sentient beings, will the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas become long-lived? The Blessed One declared: Indeed, it is so. Mahakashyapa and the one with the lineage asked: Blessed One, for example, a storyteller tells various stories about mother monkeys and baby monkeys in the audience, but when he returns to his own home, he harms the mother monkey with sticks, pieces of pork, donkeys, and stones with great difficulty. Just like that, the Blessed One himself declared: If one cultivates the perception of a single child towards all sentient beings, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will be long-lived, extremely long-lived, remember their past lives, be immortal, constant, and stable. Then, why is the Blessed One himself short-lived? Are you deceiving us? Or does the Blessed One himself see all sentient beings as Rahula, and not see them? Alas, the Blessed One is truly suffering. If calculated according to human lifespan, it cannot even reach a hundred years. Since the Tathagata's life is so short, did the Blessed One cut off so many lives when he was a Bodhisattva in the past? Since his life is so short, did the Tathagata himself do extremely unpleasant things? The Blessed One declared: Mahakashyapa and the one with the lineage, do not regard the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha in this way! The Tathagata

The Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, is supremely long-lived. The Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, is supremely stable. Supremely peaceful. Supremely substantial. Supremely constant. Mahakashyapa, of the same lineage, inquired: "Venerable One, how is the Tathagata supremely long-lived?" The Venerable One replied: "Mahakashyapa, of the same lineage, just as the great rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Sarayu, Hingula, and others, and other tributaries, all flow into the great ocean alone, so too, Mahakashyapa, of the same lineage, all the rivers of life in the heavenly realms and on earth flow into the ocean of the Tathagata alone. Thus, the Tathagata is supremely long-lived. Mahakashyapa, of the same lineage, just as the four great rivers originate from the Anavatapta, so too, all collections of long life originate from the Tathagata. Thus, among all that is constant, space is supremely constant, and the Tathagata is constant like space. Thus, among all that pacifies, ghee alone is supremely pacifying, and the Tathagata, being peaceful and cool, also teaches the Dharma that is like ghee." Mahakashyapa, of the same lineage, inquired: "Venerable One, if the Tathagata is supremely long-lived, for the benefit of all sentient beings, please remain for an eon or more, and like a great cloud, shower down the rain of the sacred Dharma." The Venerable One replied: "Mahakashyapa, of the same lineage, do not generate the notion that the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly complete Buddhas, will ultimately pass away. Mahakashyapa, of the same lineage, whether it be a monk or a nun, a male or female lay practitioner, or even someone outside of this, who has attained mastery over the five superknowledges, they too can remain for an eon or more, and can walk in the sky, and can lie down, and can blaze like fire from their left side.
