Just as one who is afflicted by a cold fever is freed from suffering by going to a great physician, so too, Blessed One, we are afflicted with bodies afflicted by the cold fever of endless faults of afflictions, wrong views, and wrong livelihoods. By going to the great physician, the Blessed One, we are completely freed from all suffering and attain the unwavering bliss. Blessed One, furthermore, for example, if a person drinks rice beer and becomes intoxicated, he does not recognize himself, nor does he recognize the Dharma, nor does he recognize what is not the Dharma. He does not even recognize, "This is my mother," "This is my sister," "This is my daughter." He is reviled and despised, and his whole body is soiled with excrement and urine. Afterwards, he becomes sober and skilled in what he has become, and he thinks that alcohol is of no use at all. He thinks, "I am freed from all sins," and he meditates extensively that drinking alcohol is of no use at all, and he abandons it. Similarly, Blessed One, this world of beings, like a theatrical performer, revolves in samsara without beginning, wandering everywhere, not recognizing, "This is my mother," "This is my sister," "This is my daughter." He engages in the perception of desire together with mothers, sisters, and daughters. Just as one becomes intoxicated with rice beer, he experiences suffering. Then, those who know shame, like those who awaken from intoxication with rice beer, meditate extensively that it is of no use at all, and thus they will completely pass beyond suffering. Furthermore, just as there is no essence in the castor bean plant, so too, in this body there is no self, sentient being, life, person, born of power, son of power, or agent. Therefore, we have meditated on the perception of no-self and have done so extensively. For example, just as a leatherworker throws away a needle used for sewing, which is of no value, so too, there is no self in this body. For example, just as there is no fragrance in a kimsuka flower, so too, there is no self in this body. Therefore, we

We have cultivated the perception of non-self and practiced it extensively. The Blessed One also said: "Monks, all dharmas are without self. Practice in this way, and those who practice in this way will abandon self-grasping. If self-grasping is completely abandoned, then nirvana will be attained." The Blessed One thus declared that for the sake of all dharmas being without self, we have cultivated the perception of non-self and practiced it extensively. Furthermore, just as there are no bird tracks in the sky, so too, if one cultivates the perception of non-self, one will be separated from all aspects of views. The Blessed One said: "Do you know how to cultivate in this way?" The monks replied: "Blessed One, if one does not cultivate the perception of suffering, impermanence, and non-self, then just as a drunken person wanders around and sees temples, mounds, the earth, the sun, the moon, trees, and mountains as turning when they are not, so too, we see those worldly beings who have not cultivated the perception of suffering, impermanence, and non-self as being like drunken people. Blessed One, we have truly cultivated it." The Blessed One said: "Monks, now I will explain the meaning of this example. You do not clearly understand the meaning of this verse, this is its meaning, this is its letter. Just as a drunken person sees temples, mounds, the earth, the sun, the moon, trees, and mountains as turning when they are not, so too, those who are seized by many inverted perceptions and are completely deluded practice the perception of 'I,' the perception of 'permanent,' the perception of 'happiness,' and the perception of 'suffering.' Among these, the so-called 'I' refers to the meaning of 'Buddha.' The so-called 'permanent' refers to the meaning of 'Dharmakaya.' The so-called 'happiness' refers to the meaning of 'Nirvana.' The so-called 'suffering' is a term of Dharma. Monks, you say with arrogance and pride: 'Blessed One, we have cultivated the perception of suffering, impermanence, and non-self.'

Do not be arrogant! If you cultivate the three aspects in this way, then your cultivation of the three aspects in my teachings will become meaningless. Cultivating the three aspects of understanding suffering is the distinction of distinctions, and even more so. To perceive suffering as happiness is a reversal. To perceive happiness as suffering is a reversal. To perceive impermanence as permanence is a reversal. To perceive permanence as impermanence is a reversal. To perceive selflessness as self is a reversal. To perceive self as selflessness is a reversal. To perceive impurity as purity is a reversal. To perceive purity as impurity is a reversal. Because you have not correctly understood these four reversals, you have cultivated the practices that should be cultivated a great deal. You have cultivated happiness as suffering. You have cultivated permanence as impermanence, self as selflessness, and purity as impurity. Worldly people also have happiness, self, permanence, and purity. Those who transcend the world also have happiness, self, permanence, and purity. But there is a contradiction here. "Words" refers to the language of worldly people. "Meaning" refers to the wisdom that transcends the world. Then, the monks said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, regarding the four reversals and so on, these teachings established by the Tathagata, we have seen and cultivated them for a long time. Now, please tell us what we should do. Please remain in the world for a kalpa or more than a kalpa. Whatever the Tathagata teaches, we will do accordingly. If the Tathagata does not agree to remain, we do not want to live under the same roof with poisonous snakes. Because if the Tathagata does not remain, pure conduct is meaningless. For your own sake, we...
