Do not be discouraged. You should regard the Tathagata as Mount Sumeru. I shall now enter into Nirvana. That supreme bliss is my Dharma-nature. It is the realm of activity of all Buddhas, so do not weep. Then, the blacksmith's son, Encourager, entreated the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, it is so. It is so, but Nirvana is inconceivable even to me, what need is there to mention other beings of inferior vehicle, like bees. Blessed One, alas! I am now equal to the Bodhisattva, the supreme among men, endowed with great fortune, worthy of offerings, such as the transformed Youthful Manjushri, and all those who have exhausted defilements. Blessed One, for example, just as a newly ordained young novice is counted among the Sangha on the very day of his ordination and is truly assembled, so too, by the power of the Tathagata, I am included in the ranks of the Bodhisattvas, the great beings, and am truly assembled. Blessed One, I desire the Tathagata to remain in the world for a long time, and I do not desire him to pass into Nirvana like food that has been digested. Then, at that time, the transformed Youthful Manjushri said to the blacksmith's son, Encourager: Encourager, do not say such things as, 'I desire the Tathagata to remain in the world for a long time, and I do not desire him to pass into Nirvana like food that has been digested.' But the nature of conditioned phenomena should be observed. Whoever observes in this way will perfect the meditation on emptiness. One who desires the sacred Dharma should train in this way. Encourager said: Venerable Manjushri, if the Tathagata, who is the god of gods, the most venerable, were also conditioned, then he would not be worthy of being the god of gods. Conditioned phenomena should be known to be like water bubbles and revolve like chariot wheels. The gods are known as the most long-lived, but the Tathagata did not even live a hundred years. Therefore, the Tathagata is not worthy of being the god of gods. For example, if someone acts as a village chief, but in the end he will

Having become very powerful, he even surpassed the power of a great minister. He enjoys the fruits of his power obtained through Dharma. However, when his merit is exhausted and his power declines, he is exploited and despised by others. Why is that? Because he has become poor. Similarly, if the Tathagata were to become a conditioned phenomenon, because that is the cause of death, he would not be fit to be the god of gods. Manjushri, therefore, do not regard the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the god of gods, as being the same as conditioned phenomena. Manjushri, do you knowingly regard the Tathagata as having the nature of conditioned phenomena, or do you regard him as such out of ignorance? If the Tathagata were the same as conditioned phenomena, then in the three realms, the Tathagata who has attained the power of Dharma would not be fit to be the god of gods. For example, a certain king has a giant who is the best of a thousand giants. Because all the giants cannot defeat him, he has obtained the name "Victor of a Thousand Giants." Because he is an unparalleled giant, he attains great power. So, is it untrue that the fame of hearing the name "Victor of a Thousand Giants" is untrue? If he has merit, then he obtains the name of one who has merit. Similarly, the Tathagata has also conquered all the giants of the afflictive demon, the skandha demon, the son of the gods demon, and the naturally existing demon, so like the Victor of a Thousand Giants, through the gate of true qualities, he is called the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha in the three realms. Therefore, Manjushri, do not completely regard the Tathagata as being the same as conditioned phenomena. For example, some Take birth in a wealthy and rich family, but their lives are short. When astrologers see this, they point out that this child has a short life. When his parents hear this, they think that this person will not be beneficial to our family, so they do not count him and do not love him. Similarly, whether it is a male, female, god, or Brahma, anyone who has a short life is discriminated against.
