What is called "I" exists within creation and is also permanent. Gautama, for example, if a house catches fire, the house burns down, but the owner comes out. It cannot be said that because the house burned down, the owner also burned down. My Dharma is also like that, although this created body is impermanent, at the time of impermanence, what is called "I" will come out. Therefore, what I call "I" is pervasive and also permanent. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, as you say, what is called "I" is pervasive and also permanent, that is not right. Why is that? Because pervasiveness has two aspects, namely permanence and impermanence. There are also two aspects, namely form and formlessness. Therefore, if, as you say, there is something that exists in everything, then it is permanent and also impermanent, it is both with form and without form. As you say, the house burned down, but the owner came out, so it is also impermanent, that is also not right. Why is that? Because the house is not the owner, and the owner is not the house, burning happens to other things, and appearance is also other things, so what is called "I" is not like that. Why is that? I am form, form is me. I am formless, formlessness is me. If I am formless, why do you say that when form is impermanent, I will come out? Son of good family, if you think in your mind that what is called "I" in all sentient beings is one, is the same, then that contradicts both the worldly and the transcendental Dharma. Why is that? Because worldly Dharma has father, mother, son, and daughter. If what is called "I" is one, then the father is also the son, and the son is also the father. The mother is also the daughter, and the daughter is also the mother. The enemy is also the friend, and the friend is also the enemy, the other shore is also this shore, and this shore is also the other shore. Therefore, what is called "I" of all sentient beings is one, is the same, that contradicts both the worldly and the transcendental Dharma. Sani asked: What is called "I" of all sentient beings is one, is the same, I do not speak of individual names.

He says, 'Each individual has an "I."' The Blessed One said, 'If you say that each person has an "I," then the term "I" would become many, and that is not permissible.' Why is that? Because, as you said before, the term "I" pervades all. If it pervades all, then the fruits of all sentient beings should also be the same. When Devadatta sees, Sudatta should also see; when Devadatta does, Sudatta should also do; when Devadatta hears, Sudatta should also hear, and all dharmas should be the same. However, when Devadatta sees, Sudatta does not see. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the "I" pervades all. If it does not pervade all, then it is impermanent.' Sani replied, 'Gautama, the "I" that I speak of pervades all sentient beings. However, dharma and non-dharma do not pervade all. Therefore, what Sudatta does is different, and what Devadatta does is also different. Therefore, Gautama, when Sudatta sees, should Devadatta also see? Or, when Sudatta hears, should Devadatta also hear?' It is unreasonable to say so. The Blessed One said, 'Son of good family, are dharma and non-dharma created by karma?' Sani replied, 'Gautama, they are created by karma.' The Blessed One said, 'Son of good family, if dharma and non-dharma are created by karma, then if they are the same dharma, can they be said to be different? Why is that? Because in the karma created by Sudatta, there should be the "I" of Devadatta; and in the karma created by Devadatta, there should also be the "I" of Sudatta. Therefore, when Sudatta does, Devadatta should also do, and dharma and non-dharma would become the same. Son of good family, if the dharma and non-dharma of all sentient beings are like that, then the ripening of the fruits of karma would also be impossible to be different. Son of good family, from a seed comes a fruit...'
