The three daughters of the earth liberate from sorrow. Therefore, liberation from sorrow is permanence, bliss, self, and purity. For example, there are three diseases in the world: bile, wind, and phlegm. These three diseases are also treated with three medicines: bile disease is treated with ghee, wind benefits from oil residue, and phlegm benefits from honey. Likewise, these three medicines are beneficial for the three diseases. Son of the lineage, there is no oil residue in the wind, and no wind in the oil residue, no phlegm in the honey, and no honey in the phlegm, yet they are curative. All sentient beings also have three diseases: desire, hatred, and delusion. For these three diseases, there are also three medicines: for the disease of desire, one should cultivate the impure contemplation; for the disease of hatred, one should cultivate loving-kindness; for the disease of delusion, one should cultivate dependent origination. Son of the lineage, to eliminate desire, one should cultivate non-desire; to eliminate hatred, one should cultivate non-hatred; to eliminate delusion, one should cultivate non-delusion. There are no three medicines in the three diseases, and no three diseases in the three medicines. Son of the lineage, because there are no three medicines in the three diseases, it is impermanent, without bliss, without self, and without purity. Because there are no three diseases in the three medicines, it is permanent, blissful, self, and pure. Vasita asked: Blessed One, Tathagata, please show me permanence and impermanence. What is permanence? What is impermanence? The Blessed One replied: Son of the lineage, form is impermanent, and so on, up to consciousness is impermanent. Liberated form is permanent, and liberated consciousness is permanent. Son of the lineage, if any son or daughter of the lineage correctly cultivates the impermanence of form up to consciousness, then they will attain the Dharma of permanence.

It should be understood in this way. Vasita pleaded: World Honored One, I have realized the Dharma of permanence and impermanence. The World Honored One instructed: Son of good family, how do you realize the Dharma of permanence and impermanence? Vasita pleaded: World Honored One, I realize that my form, up to my consciousness, is impermanent, while liberation is permanent. The World Honored One instructed: Son of good family, you have repaid the kindness of this body very well. The World Honored One instructed the Venerable Kaundinya: Vasita has attained the Arhatship, give him the three Dharma robes and the alms bowl. The Venerable Kaundinya, as instructed by the World Honored One, gave the Dharma robes and the alms bowl. After that, Vasita took the Dharma robes and the alms bowl and said to Kaundinya: I have obtained the good fruit with this evil body. Venerable, please do not worry about the hardship, for my sake, please go to the World Honored One and report this: A sinful person like me mentioned the lineage of the Tathagata and said things like "you and I", please confess. Do not stay with this poisonous body for a long time, please say "I will enter Nirvana". After that, the Venerable Kaundinya went to where the Buddha was, and upon arriving, reported to the World Honored One: Bhikshu Vasita has a great sense of shame and concern, I am very foolish, I mentioned the lineage of the Tathagata, and said things like "you and I", please confess on my behalf. Do not stay with this body, which is like a poisonous snake, for a long time, I will enter Nirvana. The World Honored One instructed the Venerable Kaundinya: Bhikshu Vasita planted roots of virtue in front of countless Buddhas in the past, so now he can abide as the Dharma teaches. By abiding in accordance with the Dharma, he will obtain the true fruit. Therefore, you should make offerings to his body. The Sutra of the Complete Nirvana of the Noble One, Volume Fifty-Two. After Kaundinya heard these words from the World Honored One, he returned to where his body was and made offerings.

So! At that time, when Vasiṣṭha burned his body, he manifested various miraculous powers. Seeing this situation, the heretics exclaimed loudly: "Vasiṣṭha, through the mantras and skills of the ascetic Gautama, will surely surpass the ascetic Gautama before long." At that time, in that circular gathering, a wandering ascetic named Sani again inquired: "Gautama, is there a self (Tibetan: བདག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: आत्म, Sanskrit Romanization: ātma, Chinese literal meaning: self)?" The Tathagata did not speak. "Gautama, then is there no self?" The Tathagata still did not speak. Like this, even after asking two or three times, the Tathagata still did not speak. Sani again reported: "Gautama, if all sentient beings have a self, and it pervades everything, is it one or created, then why does Gautama remain silent?" The Blessed One said to Sani: "Is the self you speak of pervasive?" Sani reported: "Gautama, it is not only I who say this, but all wise and intelligent people also say so." The Blessed One said: "Son of good family, if the self pervades everything, then beings born in the five realms should also experience the ripening of karma at the same time. If beings born in the five realms experience the ripening of karma at the same time, then why do wanderers like you not commit evil deeds, but instead practice virtuous dharma to prevent sentient beings from falling into hell, and desire to experience the body of gods?" Sani reported: "Gautama, in my teachings, the self is divided into two types: the self of the created body and the self of the permanent body. Because of the self of the created body, I abandon evil deeds, do not fall into hell, and diligently practice virtuous dharma, hoping to be born in the heavenly realms." The Blessed One said: "Son of good family, you say that the self pervades everything, but if the self exists in the created body, then it is impermanent. If it does not exist in the created body, how can it be said to pervade everything?" Sani reported: "Gautama, the self that I have established...
