The face is permanent, but all dharmas such as greatness are impermanent. Brahmin, according to what you say, in your dharma the cause is permanent and the effect is impermanent. In my dharma, although the cause is impermanent, if the effect is permanent, what fault is there in that? Brahmin, are there two kinds of causes in your dharma? He replied: Yes. The Blessed One said: How are they? The Brahmin replied: There are two kinds of causes, the cause of arising and the cause of illumination. The Blessed One said: What is the cause of arising? What is the cause of illumination? The Brahmin replied: The so-called cause of arising is like a pot arising from clay. The so-called cause of illumination is like a lamp illuminating things. The Blessed One said: Are the natures of these two causes the same? If they are the same, then the cause of arising should also become the cause of illumination, and the cause of illumination should also become the cause of arising, is that so? He replied: No. The Blessed One said: If the cause of arising does not become the cause of illumination, and the cause of illumination does not become the cause of arising, then, can one become the cause of the other? The Brahmin replied: One cannot become the cause of the other, but one is the cause for the other. Brahmin, is that which is illuminated by the cause of illumination in accordance with the light? He replied: No. The Blessed One said: My dharma also attains Nirvana from impermanence, but it is not impermanent. Brahmin, because it is obtained from the cause of illumination, it is permanent, blissful, has a self, and is completely pure. Because it is obtained from the cause of arising, it is impermanent, without bliss, without a self, and is not completely pure. Therefore, the Tathagata also speaks of two kinds, although he speaks of two kinds in this way, in reality there are not two kinds. Therefore, the Tathagata is called one who does not speak of two kinds. As you say, the wise elders of the past said that the Buddha's descent into the world is to speak of non-duality, it is very good to hear this. Now, all the Buddhas who abide in the ten directions and three times speak without any difference, therefore.
