Do not despise! Great king, who created the waxing and waning of this moon, the salty taste of the great ocean, and the Himalayas, etc.? Wasn't it us Brahmins, etc.? Great king, haven't you heard? The Rishi Agada poured the water of the Ganges into his ears for twelve years, haven't you heard? Furthermore, the Rishi Gautama, endowed with great miraculous powers, transformed himself into the body of Indra for twelve years. The body of Indra was transformed into a ewe, a body with a thousand marks, haven't you heard? Great king, haven't you heard that the power of a Rishi can drink all the water of the four great oceans in one day, and the great earth also becomes dry? Great king, haven't you heard that the Rishi Vaspa created the three eyes of the king of the gods, Isvara? Great king, haven't you heard that the Rishi Alala turned a city like Alala into dust? Great king, there are such powerful Rishis among the Brahmins. If they are manifestly present, great king, why do you despise us so much? The king said: O gentlemen, if you do not believe my words and wish to debate, the Tathagata, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, is now sitting under the Sal tree. Go there and ask as you please. The Tathagata will distinguish and answer according to your wishes. At that time, King Ajatashatru, together with his retinue of heretics, arrived where the Buddha was, bowed with his head, circumambulated three times from the right, and sat respectfully to one side. He said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if these heretics ask or debate about anything, please answer them accordingly. The Blessed One said: Great king, the Tathagata knows the time, please wait a moment. Then, a Brahmin named Shatishuna from among the retinue said: Is the Nirvana of the ascetic Gautama, as it is called, a permanent Dharma? Great Brahmin, it is so, it is so.

It is so. The Brahmin further reported: It is not permissible to say that Gautama's Nirvana is permanent. Why is that? The law of the world is that fruit is born from seeds, and the continuity is unbroken. For example, it is like clay turning into pottery, and silk thread turning into cloth. If Gautama emphasizes impermanence, then he will attain Nirvana. If the cause is not permanent, how can the fruit be said to be permanent? If Gautama is liberated from desire, it is Nirvana. If one is liberated from desire for form and formlessness, it is Nirvana. If all afflictions such as ignorance cease, it is Nirvana. From desire to the afflictions of ignorance, everything is impermanent. If the cause is impermanent, then the attainment of Nirvana should also be impermanent. Gautama often said that causes and conditions cause people to ascend to heaven, and causes and conditions cause sentient beings to fall into hell, and liberation from causes and conditions. Therefore, all dharmas are born from causes and conditions. If causes and conditions can be liberated, then can it be said to be permanent? Gautama said that form is born from conditions, so it is impermanent. Sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness are also the same. Thus, if liberation is form, then it is impermanent. Sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness are also impermanent in the same way. If there is liberation beyond the five aggregates, then liberation will become space. If it is space, it cannot be said to be born from cause and condition. Why is that? Because permanence and oneness are pervasive in all places. Gautama also said that what is born from cause is suffering. If it is suffering, why is it said that liberation is happiness? Gautama also said that impermanence is suffering, and suffering is selflessness. If it is impermanent, suffering, and selfless, then it is impure, the dharma born from causes and conditions.

Since all places are impermanent, are suffering, are without self, and are impure, why is it said that Nirvana is permanent, is happiness, is self, and is pure? Gautama, if it is said that it is both permanent and impermanent, both suffering and happiness, both self and without self, both pure and impure, wouldn't that be contradictory? I have heard from wise and learned elders that if the Buddha descends into the world, it is impossible to say two contradictory things. Now Gautama has said two contradictory things. Furthermore, what does it mean to say that the so-called Buddha is me? The Blessed One said to the Brahmin: Even as you say, if I ask you questions, you must answer them. The Brahmin said: Very well, Gautama. The Blessed One said: Is the self that you speak of permanent or impermanent? The Brahmin said: The self that I speak of is permanent. The Blessed One said: Brahmin, is this self the cause of all internal and external dharmas? He replied: Yes, it is so. The Blessed One said: Brahmin, how does it become the cause? He replied: Gautama, from the self arises the great. From the great arises pride. From pride arise the sixteen dharmas. These are: earth, water, fire, wind, space, and the five faculties of consciousness, namely, eye, ear, nose, tongue, touch, and the five faculties of the body, namely, hands, feet, mouth, hair, the male and female faculties, and the faculty of mental equanimity. These sixteen dharmas arise from the five dharmas of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The root of these twenty-one dharmas are three, namely, attachment, aversion, and ignorance. Attachment is desire. Aversion is hatred. Ignorance is unknowing. Gautama, all these twenty-five dharmas arise from the self. The Blessed One said: Brahmin, are these dharmas, such as the great, permanent or impermanent? He replied: Gautama, the self of my dharma
