I do not know. Let's discuss the sacred Dharma a little. If the ascetic Gautama overcomes us, we will be his servants. If we overcome him, he must be our servant. After saying this, countless non-Buddhists gathered together and arrived in the central region of Dhṛtarāṣṭra before King Ajātaśatru. Seeing them, the king said this: "Hey, gentlemen, where are you going? Each of you is diligently practicing the noble path, having renounced home for homelessness, completely abandoning all household possessions and enjoyments, and being worshiped with respect by all the villagers. If there is no objection to respect and service, why have you all gathered here? Hey, gentlemen, each of you adheres to your own religion, having ordained according to your own precepts, and are not in agreement. Having ordained according to your own precepts, you are diligently practicing the path. What is the reason, what is the cause, that today you have all gathered together with one mind, like leaves blown together by a strong wind? I am always the protector and savior of the ordained, and even when I was young, I did not spare my body and life." At that time, all the non-Buddhists said this: "Great King, please listen carefully. The Great King is like a great bridge of Dharma, like a whetstone of great Dharma, like a scale of great Dharma, a container of all virtues, the true essence of all virtues, like the path of the sacred Dharma, like a fertile field for all seeds, like the foundation of all lands, like the reflection of a mirror for all realms, like the image of all gods, like the parents of all villagers. Great King, the treasury of all the jewels of merit in all the worlds is the king's body. Why is it called a treasury of merit? Because when the king judges, he does not distinguish between relatives and enemies, but treats them equally, like earth, water, fire, and wind."

are similar. Therefore, the king is called a treasure of virtues. Great King, although the lifespan of beings nowadays is short, the king's virtues are like the time of the past kings who were long-lived and extremely happy. Furthermore, the Great King is like King Svatikya, Kanishka, Kshanti, Nahusha, Yayati, Shibi, Papa Icchaku, and others who are endowed with complete virtuous qualities. Great King, you are also like them. Great King, because of the Great King, all the people of the country are happy and joyful. Therefore, all of us renunciates are willing to stay in this country, uphold the precepts, and diligently pursue the right path. Great King, wherever the renunciates of our order reside, they uphold the precepts and diligently pursue the right path. The King also has the opportunity to practice virtue. Great King, all the thieves in the world have been stopped by you, and all renunciates have no fear. However, you have not stopped the great evildoer, the ascetic Gautama, so we are very afraid of him. The ascetic Gautama is arrogant about his lineage and possesses a beautiful complexion. Because of past generosity, he has obtained many possessions, and he is arrogant about these things, giving rise to great pride. Furthermore, he is arrogant because he is skilled in mantras. Because of these reasons, he cannot practice austerities, but wears very soft clothes and bedding, and so on. Therefore, all the wicked people in the world gather around him, seeking gain and fame, and gather near him, unable to practice austerities. Through the power of mantras, he has subdued Upagupta, Shariputra, Maudgalyayana, and others. Now, in order to gather our residence, this Sal grove, and our attendants into his retinue, he proclaims that there is a permanent, blissful, self, and pure body. Great King, when the ascetic Gautama previously taught impermanence, suffering, no-self, and impurity, we could tolerate it, but now he says that there is permanence.

We cannot tolerate the statement that there is happiness, self, and complete purity. Great King, please listen carefully. What is the use of establishing doctrines and arguing with the ascetic Gautama? The king said: O men, who has deceived you? Your minds are so intoxicated and confused, like the waves of water, or the whirling of a firebrand, or a monkey going up a tree, that even I am ashamed. Wise and intelligent people will be very compassionate when they hear this, and foolish and ignorant people will ridicule and curse it. What you say is not the words of a renunciant. If you are afflicted with diseases of wind, bile, and phlegm, I have good medicine to heal you. If you are possessed by a hungry ghost, a doctor skilled in mantras can heal you. You are now like destroying Mount Sumeru with your fingernails, or wanting to pierce a diamond with thorns. Great beings, for example, like a foolish and ignorant person waking up a hungry and sleeping lion king, or putting his hand in the mouth of a poisonous snake, or wanting to touch a spark covered with ashes with his hand, you are also like that. Son of good family, for example, like a fox roaring like a lion, or a small bee competing with a flying bird in speed, or a rabbit measuring the depth of the ocean, you are also like that now. If you dream of defeating the ascetic Gautama, that dream is false and cannot be believed. O men, generating such a mind is like a moth flying into a fire. Do not say again what I have said. Do not let others hear you praising me as being as equal as a scale. At that time, the non-Buddhists also said to the king: Great King, has he been struck by the knowledge-mantra of the ascetic Gautama? The Great King did not believe the words spoken by the noble ones and became doubtful. Great King, regarding these great beings...
