Having asked, "Is it true to say this?" If he says, "It is true that I said that." Why is that? Because I, Gautama, have directly seen that some beings who commit sinful and unwholesome deeds possess enjoyment and power. Some who perform virtuous deeds are poor and without power. Some do much work but do not obtain wealth, while others obtain it naturally without effort. Some are full of loving-kindness and do not kill, yet have short lives, while others delight in killing and live to a ripe old age. Some practice pure chastity and diligently keep the precepts, yet some attain liberation and some do not. Therefore, I say that all beings experience suffering and happiness due to the causes and conditions of past actions." I would then ask that very good person, "Have you truly seen past actions? If actions exist, are they many or few? How much can be eliminated by practicing austerities now? Is that action exhaustible or inexhaustible? If that action is exhaustible, is it all exhausted?" If he says to me that he does not know, I will tell this parable for him. For example, if a person is struck by a poisoned arrow, his relatives seek a doctor who can extract the arrow, and after the arrow is removed, his body becomes very comfortable. Later, even after ten years, the doctor removes the arrow and applies medicine to the wound, and after it heals, he clearly remembers being very comfortable. If you do not even know past actions, how can you know that practicing austerities now can eliminate past actions?" If he also says, "Gautama, if you also have past actions, why can't I criticize your past actions? In the sutras spoken by Gautama, it is also said, 'If you see someone who is rich, enjoys possessions, and has power, know that this is the result of past generosity.' Isn't that also a past action?" I would say to him, "That is known through inference, and cannot be said to be truly known. In my teachings, some know the result through the power of causes.

Some places also know the cause from the fruit. In the Buddha's teachings, there is both past karma and present karma. But you are not like that, you only have past karma, and no present karma. Your Dharma does not cut off karma by means of methods and combinations, but my teachings are not like that, they are cut off by methods and combinations. You say that suffering ends when karma ends, but I am not like that, karma and suffering will only end when afflictions end. Therefore, I rebuke your past karma. Also, say this: Gautama does not know me, the teacher said this, I am not wrong. Even if you say that, I will ask him, who is your teacher? Even if he says that my teacher is the light protector, I will ask him, does your teacher know the past karma? What's wrong with asking so well? If your teacher says he doesn't know, why do you listen to him? If he says he knows, ask this: Will the inferior cause of suffering cause the experience of superior and medium suffering? Will the medium cause of suffering cause the experience of inferior and superior suffering? Will the superior cause of suffering cause the experience of medium and inferior suffering? Ask like this. If he says no, say this: Teacher, why do you say that experiencing suffering and happiness is only past karma, not present karma? Also ask this: Is the present suffering the karma of the past? If it has existed since the past, then all past karma is exhausted. If everything is exhausted, why is this body still feeling it now? If it does not exist in the past, but only exists in the present, why do you say that all beings' suffering and happiness are previous karma? If you say that practicing asceticism now will make the past karma disappear, how will the present ascetic practice disappear? If it does not disappear, then suffering will become constant. If suffering is constant, why can one be liberated from suffering?

Say, "Oh yes." If another action invalidates asceticism, if the past is exhausted, how can there be suffering? If that person practices asceticism in that way, having done a deed of happiness, will he experience the fruit of suffering? Having done a deed of suffering, will he experience the fruit of happiness? Is there any non-experiencing of the fruit of a deed that is neither suffering nor happiness? Will the present maturation become the future maturation? Will the future maturation become the present maturation? Will the two maturations become no maturation? Will maturation necessarily become no maturation? Will no maturation necessarily become maturation? Ask this. If they say there is no Gautama, I will say this to them again. If it is not so, why practice asceticism? Therefore, there must be past dharmas, and there must be present causes and conditions. Therefore, I say that karma arises from the cause of afflictions, and maturation is experienced from the cause of karma. Therefore, it should be understood that all sentient beings have past karma and present causes and conditions. Although there is karma from the past, the causes and conditions of food and drink are needed in the present. Person, if you say that individual beings experiencing happiness and experiencing suffering are the causes and conditions of past karma, that is not right. Why is that? For example, if a person kills someone who is an enemy to the king, by that cause and that condition, he will obtain much wealth and jewels. Thus, by obtaining wealth and jewels, he will experience happiness in the present, because he has done the cause of becoming happy in the present, so he experiences happiness in the present. For example, if a person kills a prince whom the king loves, by that cause and that condition, body and life will be lost, because he has done the cause of becoming suffering in the present, so he experiences various sufferings in the present.
