He taught, "Good, good! Son of good family, you have thoroughly understood the two extremes and completely cut off afflictions and karma." He requested, "Bhagavan, I request to be ordained and receive full ordination." The Bhagavan taught, "Welcome." Then he became a monk. At that time, he cut off all the afflictions of the three realms and attained the fruit of an Arhat. Then another Brahmin named Shin Tu Gye Pa also requested, "Gautama, do you know what I am thinking?" The Bhagavan taught, "Son of good family, Nirvana is permanent, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, wrong views are evil, and the right path is the noble path." The Brahmin requested, "Gautama, for what reason do you say that?" He taught, "Son of good family, you think that begging is permanent, inviting is impermanent, wrong views are base, and the right path is a victory banner. Therefore, Nirvana is permanent, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, wrong views are evil, and the right path is the Noble Eightfold Path. Your previous thoughts were not like this." The Brahmin requested, "Gautama, you completely know what I am thinking. Will all sentient beings be liberated through the Noble Eightfold Path?" At that time, the Bhagavan did not speak and did not answer. The Brahmin requested, "Gautama, since you know what I am thinking, why don't you answer my question and remain silent?" Then the venerable Kaundinya said, "Great Brahmin, if you ask whether the world has an end or is endless, the Tathagata, according to the Dharma nature, remains silent and does not answer. The Noble Eightfold Path is the right path, and Nirvana is permanent. If you diligently practice the Noble Eightfold Path, you will attain liberation. If you do not diligently practice, you will not attain liberation. Great Brahmin, for example, if a great city has no holes or roads for liberation on its four sides, but only one gate, if the gatekeeper is skilled and has wisdom, then he will let in those who can be let in, and he will not let in those who cannot be let in. Even if he does not know how many people are entering and leaving, all those entering and leaving

It is certain to know that everything must pass through that gate. Son of good family, the Tathagata is also the same as this. The city is a metaphor for Nirvana, the gate is a metaphor for the Noble Eightfold Path, and the gatekeeper is a metaphor for the Tathagata. Son of good family, although the Tathagata has not spoken of the answer of exhaustion and non-exhaustion, how much will be exhausted is due to diligently practicing the Noble Eightfold Path. The Brahmin said: Good, good! Venerable Kaundinya is very skilled at expounding the excellent Dharma of the Tathagata. I also understand the city and the road, and I believe like a gatekeeper. Kaundinya said: Good! It is very good that the Brahmin has generated the supreme and vast mind! The World Honored One taught: All-knowing Kaundinya, do not say that. This Brahmin did not just generate such a mind now. Kaundinya, in the past, countless World Honored Ones have passed away. Before that, there was a Buddha World Honored One named Samantaprabha Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Vidyā-caraṇa-saṃpanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣa-damya-sārathi, Śāsta deva-manushyānāṃ, Buddha World Honored One descended into the world. Having generated the supreme and perfect Bodhi mind for that Buddha, and having attained Buddhahood in this Bhadrakalpa, it has been a long time since he understood and realized the characteristics of the Dharma, but for the sake of sentient beings, he appears as a heretic, pretending not to know. Therefore, Kaundinya, you should not say that generating the supreme mind is very good, very good. At that time, the World Honored One knowingly asked the venerable Kaundinya: Where is the bhikkhu Delight now? The venerable Kaundinya replied: World Honored One, the bhikkhu Delight is now twelve yojanas away from this Sala grove, and is being harassed by sixty-four thousand demons. Those demons transform into the image of the Tathagata, some say that all dharmas arise dependently, some say that all dharmas do not arise dependently, and some say that dependent arising
