Life is called fire. When it is solid, it is called earth. Why is it necessarily said to have the nature of fire? Noble son, the nature of water is to flow. If water freezes, it is not called earth. It is still called water. Why is that? When waves surge, it is not called wind. Since it is not called wind when it flows, it should not be said that it is not water when it freezes. Thus, even these two things are transformed by causes and conditions. Why do you say that all phenomena are not transformed by causes and conditions? Noble son, if the five faculties of seeing, hearing, feeling, knowing, and touching are naturally inherent and not transformed by causes and conditions, that is not right. Why is that? Noble son, if self-nature itself does not change, then the self-nature of the eye, which is seeing, should always be able to see, and there should be no time when it can and cannot see. Therefore, it should be understood that seeing arises from causes and conditions, and not from the absence of causes and conditions. Noble son, as you say, the arising and liberation of desire are not caused by the five objects, which is also not right. Why is that? Noble son, although the arising and liberation of desire are not caused by the five objects, desire arises because of discriminating unwholesomeness. Liberation is attained because of discriminating wholesomeness. Noble son, desire arises and liberation occurs due to internal causes and conditions. It arises and grows due to external causes and conditions. Therefore, it is not right for you to say that all phenomena have their own self-nature, and that the arising and liberation of desire are not caused by the five objects. Noble son, as you say, those who possess faculties are poor and have no power. Those who lack faculties and are deficient have great wealth and power. From this perspective, self-nature exists and is not caused by causes and conditions, which is not right. Why is that? Beings ripen their fruits from karma. The ripening of these fruits is of three kinds: manifest ripening and ripening after birth.

and later maturing. The poor and the rich, those with abilities and those without, are also distinct. If there were inherent existence, then those with abilities would be the kind that have great enjoyment. Those with great enjoyment are the kind that have abilities. If it were not so, then there would definitely be no inherent existence, but it would arise from causes and conditions. Son of good family, as you say, in the world, countless ignorant children do not distinguish the five sensory realms, sometimes crying and sometimes laughing. Therefore, to say that everything has inherent existence is also not acceptable. Why is that? If there were inherent existence, then laughing would always be laughing, and crying would always be the kind that cries. It is impossible to sometimes laugh and sometimes cry. Like that, sometimes laughing and sometimes crying, then everything should be understood as changing from causes and conditions. Therefore, to say that all phenomena have inherent existence and do not arise from causes and conditions is not correct. The Universal Wanderer asked: World Honored One, if all phenomena arise from causes and conditions, then from what causes and conditions does this body arise? The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, the causes and conditions of this body are afflictions and karma. The Universal Wanderer asked: World Honored One, if this body arises from afflictions and karma, then can these afflictions and karma be severed? The World Honored One replied: Yes, it is so. The Universal Wanderer further asked: World Honored One, please explain it to me in detail, so that after hearing it, I can fully understand without moving from this place. The World Honored One replied: Son of good family, if one understands the two extremes and has no obstruction to the Middle Way, then that person will be able to completely sever afflictions and karma. The Universal Wanderer asked: World Honored One, I have already understood and realized, and for the sacred Dharma, I have obtained the pure Dharma eye. The World Honored One replied: How have you understood and realized? (The Universal Wanderer) replied: World Honored One, the two extremes are form and the liberation from form. The so-called Middle Way is the Noble Eightfold Path, and feelings, thoughts, formations, and consciousness should also be explained in detail in this way. The World Honored One said:
