As instructed by the World Honored One, he was ordained through the ceremony of requesting and petitioning the Sangha of monks. Then, after fifteen days had passed, he attained the fruit of stream-entry. Having attained the fruit, he thought to himself: 'Whatever can be attained through learning with wisdom, I have attained. I believe I am capable of seeing the Buddha,' and so he went to where the Buddha was. Having arrived, he bowed to the World Honored One with his head, respectfully sat to one side, and said to the World Honored One: 'Whatever wisdom can be attained through learning, I have attained. Please teach me how to attain wisdom without learning.' The World Honored One replied: 'Son of good family, there are two dharmas: calm abiding (shamatha) and insight (vipassanā). You should diligently strive in these. Son of good family, if a monk wishes to attain the fruit of stream-entry, he should diligently strive in these two dharmas. If one wishes to attain the fruit of once-returner, non-returner, or Arhat, one should also diligently strive in these two dharmas. Son of good family, if a monk wishes to attain the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the six supernormal powers, the eight noble persons, the eight abodes of victory, the wisdom of non-contention, the wisdom of the crown of the head, the ultimate wisdom, the four analytical knowledges, the vajra-like samadhi, the knowledge of exhaustion, and the knowledge of non-arising, one should also diligently strive in these two dharmas. Son of good family, if one wishes to attain the ten bhumis, the forbearance of the dharma of non-arising, the forbearance of the dharma of no-characteristic, the forbearance of the dharma of inconceivability, the noble conduct, the pure conduct, the divine conduct, the conduct of a Bodhisattva, the samadhi like the sky, the samadhi of the seal of wisdom, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness samadhi, earth samadhi, non-retreating samadhi, heroic-going samadhi, vajra-like samadhi, and unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment,

Wishing to practice the conduct of the Buddha, one should diligently apply oneself to these two dharmas. Having heard this, the Bhikshu bowed to the Bhagavan and then went out to the grove of Sala trees. By diligently applying himself to these two dharmas, he soon attained the fruit of an Arhat. At that time, countless Bhikshus were going to where the Buddha was. The Bhikshu saw them and said, "Venerable ones, where are you going?" The Bhikshus said, "We are going to the presence of the Buddha." The Bhikshu then said, "Venerable ones, if you go to the presence of the Buddha, please convey the Bhikshu's message: 'If one diligently applies oneself to the two dharmas, one will attain the wisdom of no more learning. In order to repay the kindness of the Bhagavan, I will enter into Nirvana.'" At that time, those Bhikshus went to where the Buddha was and said to the Bhagavan, "The Bhikshu's message is: 'I have attained the wisdom of no more learning, and in order to repay the kindness of the Bhagavan, I will enter into Nirvana.'" The Bhagavan said, "Bhikshu, the Bhikshu has attained the fruit of an Arhat. You should make offerings to his body." At that time, the Bhikshus, according to the Buddha's instructions, went to where the relics were and made great offerings. The Great Nirvana Sutra, Chapter Fifty-Three. At that time, the wandering ascetic with the forehead ornament again said this: "What Gautama says, that even if one has done good or evil for countless lives, in the future one will still obtain a body of good or evil, is not reasonable. Why is that? As Gautama says, the body is obtained from the cause of afflictions. If the body is obtained from the cause of afflictions, then which comes first, the body or the afflictions? If the afflictions come first, then where do they reside? Where do they dwell? If the body comes first, then how can it be said to be obtained from the cause of afflictions? Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that the afflictions come first, nor is it reasonable to say that the body comes first. It is also not reasonable to say that they are simultaneous. To say that they are both prior and simultaneous is also without reason. Therefore, I believe that all dharmas are inherently empty, arising from causes and conditions..."
