Is it finite, or is it infinite? Is it neither finite nor infinite? Is it the body, or is it the life, or are the body and life different? Does the Tathagata who has passed into Nirvana go? Does he not go? Is it neither like going nor like not going? It is neither like going, nor like not like going, the Blessed One did not say so. Puna asked: What fault does Gautama see that he does not say so? The Blessed One replied: For those who say that the world is eternal, this is true, and the other is false, that is a view. Seeing with a view, the place of seeing is seeing as action, seeing with a view. Seeing as attachment, seeing as bondage, seeing as suffering, seeing as taking, seeing as destruction, seeing as sorrow, or seeing as completely entangled. Puna, because ordinary people are completely entangled by views, they are not separated from birth, old age, sickness, and death, and they revolve in the six realms, experiencing immeasurable suffering. Therefore, it should be understood that it is the same between not going and not not going. Puna, because he sees that there is such a fault in the view, he is not attached to it and does not declare it to others. Puna asked: Gautama, seeing such a fault, does not cling to it and does not declare it, then what does Gautama cling to now, and what does he declare? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, seeing as attachment is called the Dharma of Samsara. The Tathagata is separated from the Dharma of Samsara, so he is called non-attachment. Son of good family, the Tathagata is called the seer and the speaker, but not the attached one. Puna asked: Gautama, how do you see? How do you speak? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, I clearly see suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path, therefore, I separately declare the Four Noble Truths. Because I have seen such things, I have completely abandoned all views, all cravings, all struggles, and all pride. Therefore, I possess the completely pure Brahmacharya, and I have attained the eternal body through supreme peace. This eternal body is the east, the west, the south, and the

not contained by any direction. Purna asked: What cause, what reason is it that this constant body is not contained by the east, south, west, or north? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, answer truthfully what I ask of you. Son of good family, what do you think? If there is a great fire before you, and when the wind blows it, the fire blazes, you also know that it is blazing. Likewise, Gautama, when the fire goes out, you also know that it has gone out. Purna: Gautama, if someone asks you, where did this fire come from, and where did it go when it went out? How would you answer? Purna asked: Gautama, if someone asks like that, I would answer like this: The blazing of the fire depends on many causes and conditions. The old causes are exhausted, and no new causes are added, so the fire goes out. If someone else asks, where does the fire go after it goes out? How should I answer? Asked: Gautama, I would answer that the fire goes out when the causes are exhausted, and it does not go anywhere. Son of good family, the Tathagata is also like that. If from impermanent form, up to impermanent consciousness, it is blazing due to the cause of craving. Blazing means experiencing the twenty-five existences. Therefore, when it is blazing, can this fire be said to be east, west, south, or north? Now that craving has ceased, and the ripened fruit of the twenty-five existences is no longer blazing, then it cannot be said to be east, south, west, or north. Son of good family, the Tathagata is also like that, from impermanent form to impermanent consciousness, all have ceased, therefore the body is constant. If the body is constant, then it cannot be said to be east, south, west, or north. Purna asked: I would like to ask for a simile, would the Tathagata listen? The Blessed One said: Good, good, speak as you think. Blessed One, for example, outside a great city, in a grove of sala trees, there is a tree,

Having been born before, he was a hundred years old. At that time, the owner of the garden would water and cultivate it from time to time. When the bark of the tree rotted, the bark, leaves, and branches all fell to the ground, leaving only the core inside. The Tathagata is also like this, all the rotten parts have disappeared, and only the pure Dharma remains. O Blessed One, I beseech you to ordain me. The Blessed One said, "Welcome." Immediately after saying this, he became a monk, his defilements were exhausted, and he attained the fruit of an Arhat. Furthermore, a wandering ascetic named Pure Conduct said this: Gautama, if individual beings do not realize the Dharma, they will view the world as permanent, impermanent, both permanent and impermanent, neither permanent nor impermanent, and so on, up to viewing going as such and not going as such. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, because you do not understand form, and do not understand consciousness, you view the world as permanent, and so on, up to viewing going as such and not going as such. The wandering ascetic said: Gautama, if sentient beings realize what Dharma, they will not view the world as permanent, and so on, up to viewing going as such and not going as such. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, if you understand form, and understand consciousness, you will not view the world as permanent, and so on, up to viewing going as such and not going as such. The wandering ascetic said: Blessed One, please explain to me in detail the permanence and impermanence of the world. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, if someone abandons the old and does not create new karma, then that person will realize permanence and impermanence. The wandering ascetic said: Blessed One, I understand. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, how do you see it? How do you understand it? He replied: Blessed One, the old is ignorance and craving, and the new is grasping and existence. Therefore, if someone completely abandons ignorance and craving and does not create grasping and existence, then
