I sat without speaking. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, both my body and life arise from dependent origination. They do not arise from non-dependent origination. Just as the body and life are, all dharmas should be understood to be the same. The wanderer again asked: Gautama, I see that some dharmas in the world are not dependently originated. The Blessed One said: Which dharmas in the world do you see that are not dependently originated? The wanderer asked: For example, when a great fire breaks out, the flames are blown by the wind and burn other places as well. That is not dependently originated. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, I say that fire also arises from dependent origination. It does not arise from non-dependent origination. The wanderer asked: Gautama, if the flames go out and burn, not coming from wood or kindling, why do you say it is dependently originated? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, even if there is no wood or kindling, the flames will go out due to the wind. The cause and condition of the wind do not make the flames disappear. The wanderer asked: Gautama, what becomes the cause and condition for taking life between the time when a person dies and has not yet obtained the next body? The Blessed One said: Wanderer, ignorance and craving become its cause and condition. Due to the cause and condition of ignorance and craving, life is sustained. Son of good family, because of cause and condition, the body is life and life is the body. Because of cause and condition, the body is one thing and life is another. A wise and intelligent person would not say that the body and life are different in some way. The wanderer asked: Blessed One, please reveal liberation to me and let me realize cause and effect. The Blessed One said: Wanderer, the cause is also the five aggregates, and the effect is also the five aggregates. Son of good family, if sentient beings do not have

If there is no fire, there is no smoke. The wandering ascetic reported: "World Honored One, I have understood and realized." The World Honored One instructed: "Son of good family, how have you understood and realized?" He reported: "World Honored One, what is called 'fire' is affliction, which intensely burns sentient beings in the realms of hell, hungry ghosts, animals, and the abodes of gods and humans. What is called 'smoke' is the ripening of the fruit of affliction. Because of impermanence, impurity, and extreme filth, it is called smoke. If sentient beings have not created affliction, then they do not have the ripened fruit of affliction. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One said that if there is no fire, there is no smoke." World Honored One, I am one who sees correctly. Out of compassion, please grant me ordination." Then, the World Honored One instructed the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya thus: "Let this wandering ascetic be ordained and receive full ordination." Then, Kaundinya, as the Buddha had instructed, requested faith from the monastic community of monks and was ordained. After receiving full ordination and five days had passed, he attained the fruit of an Arhat. Among the retinue of the heretics, there was another wandering ascetic named Purna, who reported thus: "Gautama, do you see a permanent dharma in the world and therefore say it is permanent? Is what you say true or false? Is it permanent or impermanent? Is it both permanent and impermanent? Is it neither permanent nor impermanent? Does it have an end? Does it not have an end? Does it both have an end and not have an end? Does it neither have an end nor not have an end? Is it the body? Is it the life? Are the body and life different? Does the Thus-Gone One, having completely passed into nirvana, go? Does he not go? Does he both go and not go? Does he neither go nor not go?" The World Honored One instructed: "Purna, I do not say that there is permanence in the world, nor do I say truth or falsehood, nor do I say impermanence or permanence, nor do I say neither permanence nor impermanence, nor do I say having an end or not having an end."
