In order to know, the Tathagata is said to possess the power of knowing the faculties. Son of lineage, if I were to definitively explain those reasons, I would not be called the Tathagata possessing the power of knowing the faculties. Son of lineage, the wise know that the load of a musk yak cannot be carried by a donkey. The conduct of all sentient beings is countless, therefore, the Tathagata has shown countless kinds of Dharma. Why is that? Because sentient beings have many kinds of afflictions. If the Tathagata were to speak of one conduct, the Tathagata would not be called possessing the power of knowing the faculties. Therefore, I have said in other sutras that it is not appropriate to teach five kinds of Dharma to five kinds of sentient beings. That is, one does not praise the faithless as having true faith, one does not praise the immoral as keeping vows, one does not praise the miserly as generous, one does not praise the lazy as learned, and one does not praise the ignorant as wise. Why is that? The wise think that if one were to teach those five things to those five people, that teaching could not be called possessing the power of knowing the faculties, nor could it be called having compassion for sentient beings. Why is that? Because those five people, having heard those five things, would give rise to disbelief, malice, and anger, and because of that cause and that condition, they would ripen the fruit of suffering for countless lifetimes. Therefore, one cannot be called having compassion for sentient beings, nor can one be called possessing the power of knowing the faculties. Therefore, I previously said to Shariputra in other sutras: Do not extensively explain the Dharma to those with sharp faculties, and do not briefly explain the Dharma to those with dull faculties. Shariputra replied: Blessed One, I speak out of compassion, not because I possess the power of knowing the faculties. Son of lineage, speaking extensively and briefly is the realm of the Buddha, not something that shravakas and pratyekabuddhas can understand. Son of lineage, you

As said, after the Tathagata's complete Nirvana, the attendants each preach different teachings. These are all because of inverted views and not having obtained the correct view. Therefore, they cannot benefit themselves and others. Noble son, these sentient beings are not of the same nature, nor of the same conduct, nor of the same faculties, nor of the same circumstances, nor of the same spiritual friends. Therefore, the Tathagata has taught them various kinds of Dharma. Because of this cause and condition, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the three times in the ten directions also expound and teach the twelve categories of scriptures for the sake of sentient beings. Noble son, these twelve categories of scriptures spoken by the Tathagata are not for benefiting himself, but for benefiting others. Therefore, the five powers of the Tathagata are called the power of knowledge. For the sake of these two kinds of powers, the Tathagata thoroughly understands that this is cutting off the roots of virtue in this life, this is cutting off the roots of virtue in the next life, this is obtaining liberation in this life, and this will obtain liberation in the next life. Therefore, the Tathagata is called the supreme great power. Noble son, if someone says that the Tathagata is eternally extinguished, or that he is never extinguished, it is because they do not understand the Tathagata's intention that they say so. Noble son, on Mount Fragrant (Rī Spös), there dwell fifty-three thousand hermits. All of them planted roots of virtue in the past from the Buddha Light Protector, but they did not practice the correct path, did not serve the Buddhas, and did not listen to the holy Dharma. Therefore, for the sake of these hermits, the Tathagata told Ananda that I will enter complete Nirvana after three months. The gods, having heard these words, proclaimed them to each other, and Mount Fragrant became famous. The hermits, having heard this, arose with great regret and said: Why were we born as humans and did not serve the Buddha?

Do not do that. It is extremely rare for Buddhas, the Bhagavat, to appear in the world, just like the Udumbara flower. We should now go before the Bhagavat and listen to the sacred Dharma. Thus it was said. Son of good family, at that time, fifty-three thousand hermits came before me. I then taught them the Dharma in that very way. O great beings, form is impermanent. Why is that? Because the cause and condition of form are impermanent. If form is born from an impermanent cause, can it be called permanent? Similarly, it should be understood extensively up to consciousness. Then, those hermits, having heard those teachings, quickly attained the fruit of Arhatship. Son of good family, in the city of Kushavati (吉祥草城), there were thirty thousand powerful strongmen who were not under the control of others, and they were intoxicated with pride, boasting of their appearance, strength, lifespan, and wealth. Son of good family, in order to subdue those strongmen, I commanded Maudgalyayana's son, saying: "Go and subdue those strongmen." Then, Maudgalyayana's son, according to my command, tried to subdue them for five years using various methods, but not a single strongman listened to the Dharma or was subdued. Then, for the sake of those strongmen, I said to Ananda: "Now, in three months, I will pass into complete Nirvana." Son of good family, those strongmen, having heard such a command, gathered together and prepared the road. After three months had passed, I then went from Vaishali (广严城) to the city of Kushavati (吉祥草城), and when I had gone about halfway, I saw those strongmen from afar, and then I transformed myself into the form of a monk and went into the midst of all the strongmen and said: "What are you doing, you useless fellows?" The strongmen, having heard such words, all became angry and said: "Monk, why do you call us useless fellows?" I said: "You are indeed useless fellows. If thirty thousand of you gather together and exert all your strength, you cannot even move this small stone, shouldn't you be called useless fellows?" The strongmen said: "You to us"
