When experiencing the ripening result, there is no common taking. Son of good family, the wise and intelligent should also think like this: all sentient beings suffer physically and mentally for the sake of food. Thus, after obtaining food through many causes of suffering, why should I generate attachment to that food? After thinking like this, they will not generate attachment to food. Furthermore, when the wise and intelligent examine what the cause of the body is, they will realize that the body arises and grows due to food. I, myself, have renounced home and received vows, also to completely abandon this body. Now, if I am attached to food, how can this body be abandoned? After thinking like this, even when taking food, they should generate the thought of eating their own child's flesh, like a hungry ghost in the wilderness, and generate a completely disgusted mind, and not be attached to it. Having realized that food has many faults, they should eventually think of tactile food like this: just as when a cow's skin is peeled off, countless worms will come to eat it. Furthermore, they should eventually think of mental food like this: like a huge pile of fire. They should think of consciousness food as being pierced by three hundred sharp arrows. Son of good family, the wise and intelligent, having realized these four types of food, will never generate attachment and desire for food at any time. Even if it arises, they will completely think of impurity. What is the reason for this? It is to completely abandon attachment to food. They should extremely think of all food as impure. After extremely thinking of what is impure, if they obtain good food, or if they obtain bad food, when taking it, just as if applying medicine to a wound or malignant tumor, attachment and desire in the mind will never arise. Son of good family, any wise and intelligent person who realizes in this way is said to have completely abandoned the perception of food. Bodhisattva Light Protector asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, when the wise and intelligent think of food as impure in this way, are they truly thinking correctly? Or is it false?

It is merely an illusion. If one truly discriminates, then the food of discrimination is impure. If one merely considers it an illusion, then is the Dharma truly understood? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, such understanding is neither true nor illusory. Because attachment to food is completely abandoned, it is called true. Because something that is not a worm is seen as a worm, it is called illusory. Son of good family, all things with outflows are illusory, but they become true. Son of good family, if a bhikshu intends to go for alms, he thinks from the beginning: 'May I obtain good food there and not obtain bad food; may I obtain much and not obtain little; may I obtain it quickly and not be delayed.' If he makes such a prayer, then that bhikshu has not obtained the understanding of completely abandoning food. The practice of virtuous Dharma will also diminish day and night, and non-virtuous Dharma will arise and increase. Son of good family, if a bhikshu intends to go for alms, he thinks from the beginning: 'May those who give me alms be satisfied with food!' Thus he prays, and 'May those who give alms obtain immeasurable merit!' 'I will use this alms food to nourish this body full of suffering, and I will diligently practice virtuous Dharma, and it will be for the benefit and happiness of the donors.' Thinking thus, virtuous conduct will also increase and develop day and night, and non-virtuous Dharma will gradually decrease. Son of good family, if a bhikshu makes such an effort, then know that that person is not receiving alms from one place. Son of good family, a wise and intelligent person, possessing these four kinds of understanding, will diligently cultivate the understanding of non-attachment to the world. And he thinks: 'In all the world, there is no place that is not subject to birth, old age, sickness, and death. There is no place where my body has not been born. If there is not even one place in the world that is not subject to birth, old age, sickness, and death, then why should I be attached to the world?'
