The hungry ghost of grains is even faster. The hungry ghost who travels in the sky is faster than the hungry ghost who travels on the ground. Faster than the hungry ghost who travels in the sky are the Four Great Kings. Faster than the Four Great Kings are the gods of the sun and moon. Faster than the gods of the sun and moon is the god of extreme speed. Faster than the god of extreme speed is the lifespan of sentient beings. Son of lineage, in the time it takes for a breath to go in and out, there are four hundred arising and ceasing of the lifespan by which sentient beings live. Whoever understands life in this way is said to understand the cessation from moment to moment. Son of lineage, wise and intelligent people understand that this life that sustains us is controlled by the Lord of Death. If I were to completely abandon the Lord of Death, I would abandon impermanent life and life itself. Furthermore, wise and intelligent people understand life and lifespan to be like a large tree on a cliff by the water. Furthermore, just as a person who has committed a great crime is led to execution without refuge, or like a lion that is extremely hungry, or like a venomous snake inhaling a great wind, or like a horse that is extremely thirsty clinging to water, or like a fierce and extremely angry hungry ghost, the Lord of Death of sentient beings is also understood to be like that. Son of lineage, any wise and intelligent person who deeply understands in such a way is said to have focused intently on the concept of death. Son of lineage, a wise and intelligent person also thinks this: Now that I have renounced, even if life and lifespan cannot last more than seven days, I will exert myself diligently, keep the precepts, benefit sentient beings, and teach the Dharma for the sake of happiness, which is said to be a wise and intelligent person focusing intently on the concept of death. What need is there to mention seven days? Even if it is six days, five days, four days, three days, two days, one day, or even from one time to the time it takes for a breath to go in and out, and then to a moment, I will diligently strive for enlightenment, completely keep the precepts, and teach the Dharma for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, which is said to be a wise and intelligent person focusing intently on the concept of death.

Because the one with vows possesses the six types of mindfulness mentioned above, they diligently engage in these seven causes of mindfulness. What are the seven? They are: mindfulness that diligently engages in permanence, mindfulness that diligently engages in happiness, mindfulness that diligently engages in non-anger, mindfulness that diligently engages in non-jealousy, mindfulness that diligently engages in virtue, mindfulness that diligently engages in aspiration, mindfulness that diligently engages in non-pride, and mindfulness that is governed by samadhi. Son of good family, a monk who possesses these seven types of mindfulness is called a Shramana, called a Brahmin, also called the extremely peaceful one, also called the completely pure one, also called the liberated one, also called the wise and intelligent one, also called the one with right view, also called the one who has reached the other shore, also called the king of medicine, also called the guide. He is extremely skilled in what the Tathagata has thought and spoken. He understands, truly knows, and sees the seven types of teachings spoken by the Tathagatas, and he will cut off all doubts about the seven types of teachings. Son of good family, if someone possesses six types of mindfulness, then that person will completely reproach the three realms, completely abandon the three realms, pacify the three realms, and not be attached to the three realms. That is called a wise and intelligent person who possesses ten types of mindfulness. If a monk possesses these ten types, then he is called possessing the marks of a Shramana. Then, the Bodhisattva Light Protector, in front of the Blessed One, praised the Buddha with these verses: With compassion for all beings, the king of medicine is skilled in healing all diseases, Both body and wisdom are peaceful, establishing a self-view in the selfless Dharma, Therefore, I respectfully prostrate to the unsurpassed one. Initial mind and ultimate completion, Observing and discerning the two, the ultimate mind surpasses the initial one, Liberating others while oneself is not liberated, therefore, I prostrate to the initial mind. The initial mind becomes the teacher of gods and humans, surpassing the Hearers, The Pratyekabuddhas, and the Arhats, the generation of the mind can save all the worlds.
