That which arises from the cause of affliction is called the touch of affliction. That which arises from the cause of wisdom is called the touch of liberation. Contact from the cause of affliction gives rise to perverse perception. Contact from the cause of liberation gives rise to non-perverse perception. Thus, having understood the cause of perception, one gradually understands the ripening of the fruit. Then, the Bodhisattva Light Protector again asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, if perverse perception arises due to the cause of afflicted perception, then do all the noble ones have perverse perception? If there is no affliction, what is the meaning of this?" The Blessed One replied, "Son of good family, how can you say that the noble ones have perverse perception?" The Bodhisattva Light Protector asked, "Blessed One, all the noble ones generate the perception of a cow as a cow, and say it is a cow. They also generate the perception of a horse as a horse, and say it is a horse, and so on, with men and women, large and small, houses and vehicles, conveyances, going and coming. This is considered perverse perception." "Son of good family, all ordinary people have two perceptions: the perception of worldly fame and the perception of attachment. All the noble ones have only the perception of worldly fame, but no perception of attachment. Because all ordinary people have non-virtuous thoughts, they generate the perception of attachment to worldly fame. The noble ones, because they think of virtue, do not generate the perception of attachment to worldly fame. Therefore, ordinary people are called those with perverse perception, but the noble ones, even if they know, are not called those with perverse perception. The wise and intelligent ones thus understand the cause of perception and gradually understand the ripening of the fruit. The fruit of non-virtuous perception is that beings will experience it in the hells, among the pretas, in the birth places of animals, and as humans and gods. Just as I have cut off the cause of thinking of non-virtue, thereby cutting off the touch of ignorance, therefore perception is cut off.

It becomes like this. Because of cutting off perception, the fully ripened fruit is also completely cut off. Because wise and intelligent people cut off those causes of perception, they cultivate the eightfold noble path. Son of good family, understanding in this way is called completely pure conduct. Son of good family, this is like having the supreme king of medicine within the body of a sentient being full of poison. Just as even though there are poisonous grasses on a snowy mountain, there is also supreme medicine. Furthermore, son of good family, when a wise and intelligent person examines desire, he knows that desire is form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Son of good family, this is what the Thus-Gone One said about fruit arising from causes. Desire arises from these five things, but in reality, it is not desire. Son of good family, a foolish person, attached to feeling, generates distorted perceptions of form, and generates distorted perceptions all the way up to touch. Feeling arises from the condition of distorted perception. Therefore, it is taught that ten kinds of perceptions arise from the cause of distorted worldly perception. Because of the causes and conditions of desire, one experiences bad results in the world. One does evil to parents, renunciants, and Brahmins, and intentionally does unreasonable things, without sparing body or life. Therefore, a wise and intelligent person understands that the mind of desire will arise from the causes and conditions of unwholesome perception. A wise and intelligent person, having understood the cause of desire in this way, gradually understands the fully ripened fruit. The unwholesome fruit of that desire ripens and becomes sentient beings in hell, the realm of animals, hungry ghosts, humans, gods, and so on. This is called understanding the fully ripened fruit. If unwholesome perception is prevented, then the mind of desire will never arise. Because there is no mind of desire, one does not experience unwholesome fruit. Because one does not experience unwholesome fruit, unwholesome fruit will disappear. Therefore, I must first cut off unwholesome perception. If unwholesome perception is cut off, then those dharmas will also cease by themselves.
