Various afflictions will arise. Bodhisattva Light Protector again said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how does a wise and intelligent person understand the ripening of fruits? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, a wise and intelligent person is like this: due to the causes and conditions of outflows, sentient beings will be born in hells, animal realms, and hungry ghosts. Due to the causes and conditions of non-outflows, they will obtain the bodies of gods and humans. However, these are also impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self. From this vessel of the body, one obtains three kinds of suffering and three kinds of impermanence. Due to the causes and conditions of these outflows, sentient beings commit the five heinous crimes, experience the ripening of evil destinies, sever roots of virtue, destroy the four root downfalls, and slander the Three Jewels. A wise and intelligent person understands that obtaining this body of self generates afflictions, and considers it to be the lineage that obtains the fruits of evil destinies. Bodhisattva Light Protector again asked: Blessed One, you have also said that there are fruits without outflows, and you have also said that wise and intelligent people cut off the ripening fruits. Does the fruit without outflows belong to being cut off? Those who have attained enlightenment have fruits without outflows. If a wise and intelligent person seeks the fruit without outflows, why did the Blessed One say that wise and intelligent people should cut off the ripening fruits? If it is truly cut off in this way, then can it be said that there are noble ones now? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, the Thus-Gone One sometimes speaks of the cause as the fruit, and sometimes speaks of the fruit as the cause. Just as worldly people say that clay is pottery, and thread is cloth, this is speaking of the cause as the fruit. Speaking of the fruit as the cause is like saying that a cow is water and grass, and a person is also food. I also speak of the cause as the fruit in this way. Previously in the sutras, it was said like this: I am pure in body and mind...

Saying "going to a place" is describing the cause as the effect. Describing the effect as the cause is saying that these six sense bases are past karma, which is describing the effect as the cause. Son of good family, for all noble ones, there is actually no uncontaminated fruit, the fruit fully cultivated by all noble ones does not produce defilements, therefore it is called uncontaminated fruit. Son of good family, when a wise and intelligent person thinks like this, the fully ripened fruit of afflictions will be completely exhausted. Son of good family, a wise and intelligent person cultivates the noble path in order to completely cut off the fruit of afflictions in this way. Among them, the noble path is emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. If these noble paths are cultivated, all the fruits of afflictions will be completely exhausted. Bodhisattva Light Protector again said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, all sentient beings will produce the fruit of maturation from afflictions, and afflictions are unwholesome. The arising of afflictions from unwholesome afflictions is also called unwholesome. In this way, afflictions have two aspects: cause and effect. Because the cause is unwholesome, the effect is unwholesome; because the effect is unwholesome, the seed is unwholesome. For example, the neem tree, because its fruit is bitter, all its seeds, flowers, trunk, leaves, and so on are bitter. Just as the seed of a poisonous tree is poisonous, so is its fruit. The cause is also sentient beings, and the effect is also sentient beings; The cause is also afflictions, and the effect is also afflictions; the cause and effect of afflictions are sentient beings, and sentient beings are also the cause and effect of afflictions. If that is the case, why did the Tathagata say that the snowy mountains have both poisonous grass and the supreme king of medicine? If afflictions are sentient beings and sentient beings are afflictions, then why did he say that the body of sentient beings has the supreme king of medicine? The Blessed One said: Good, good! Son of good family, although there are immeasurable sentient beings,
