Those, other than non-virtuous discriminations, are outflows of existence. The outflow of ignorance is not knowing self and what belongs to self, and not distinguishing between inner and outer is the outflow of ignorance. Son of lineage, ignorance is the root of all outflows. Why is that? All sentient beings, due to the cause and condition of ignorance, cognize the aggregates, sense bases, and elements, and by establishing cognition, they are called sentient beings. That is, distorted cognition, distorted thought, and distorted view. By that cause and that condition, all outflows are produced. Therefore, I have said in the twelve divisions of scripture that ignorance is the cause of desire, hatred, and delusion. The Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: Blessed One, the Tathagata, you previously said in the twelve divisions of scripture that desire, hatred, and delusion arise from the cause and condition of non-virtuous discriminations. Then, by what cause and what condition does it arise from ignorance? The Buddha replied: Son of lineage, like this, these two dharmas, one is the cause of the other, and one is the fruit of the other, one gives rise to the other. Non-virtuous discrimination gives rise to ignorance. By the condition of ignorance, non-virtuous thought arises. Son of lineage, whatever gives rise to afflictions, all of that becomes the cause of affliction. Thus, the cause of affliction and the proximate cause are called ignorance and non-virtuous discrimination. Just as a sprout arises from a fruit, the fruit is the proximate cause. The four great elements are like becoming a distant cause, afflictions are also the same. The Bodhisattva Light Protector again asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, as the Blessed One has said, ignorance itself is an outflow, then why is it said that the outflows arise from the condition of ignorance? The Blessed One replied: Son of lineage, just as I said that ignorance itself is an outflow, that is inner ignorance. The outflows arise from the cause of ignorance, that is the inner and outer cause. Whatever explains that ignorance itself is an outflow, that is called inner perversion, not

Not understanding impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Whatever is taught as the cause of all afflictions is not understanding the external self and what belongs to the self. Whatever is taught as ignorance itself being a leak is without beginning or end. If asked how, it is because aggregates, sense bases, realms, and so on arise from ignorance. The Bodhisattva Light Protector again requested the Bhagavan, saying: Bhagavan, how does a wise and knowledgeable person, as the Bhagavan has said, know the cause of leaks? How does one know the cause of leaks? The Bhagavan replied: Son of good family, a wise and knowledgeable person thinks like this: What cause, what condition will cause this affliction to arise? What action has been done that will cause this affliction to arise? When will this affliction arise? In whose company will this affliction arise? Where will this affliction arise? By examining what thing will this affliction arise? Whose dwelling, bedding, alms, clothing, and medical causes of illness, etc., when requested, will cause this affliction to arise? What cause, what condition will cause it to change from inferior to intermediate? From intermediate to superior? From inferior action to intermediate? From intermediate action to superior, one completely contemplates. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, contemplating in this way, will completely abandon the cause and condition of the arising of leaks. When contemplating in this way, afflictions that have not arisen are prevented from arising. Afflictions that have arisen are stopped by skillful means. Therefore, I have said in the sutras that a wise and knowledgeable person should examine the cause of the arising of afflictions. The Bodhisattva Light Protector again requested the Bhagavan, saying: Bhagavan, how do various kinds of afflictions arise from a single sentient being's body? The Bhagavan replied: Son of good family, just as if there are various kinds of seeds in a single container, when they encounter water or rain, they grow separately, sentient beings are also like that, although it is a single container, due to the cause and condition of craving
