It should not be said 'is'. Good son, some people also say this: 'Space is a place to dwell.' As much as there is a place to dwell, that much transforms into a form-dharma, and the place of all dharmas is all impermanent, belonging to the three times. Space is permanent and does not belong to the three times. If you say there is a place, you should know that space does not exist. Again, some people say this: 'Space is order.' If it is said to be order, it becomes a countable dharma, and as much as can be counted becomes belonging to the three times. If it belongs to the three times like this, why is it called permanent? Good son, if some people also say this: 'What is called space is emptiness and non-emptiness, emptiness and non-emptiness, and these three are inseparable.' If you say 'it is emptiness', you should know that space is an impermanent dharma. Why is it said like that? Because it does not exist when it is non-empty. If you say 'it is non-empty', you should also know that space is impermanent. Why is it said like that? Because it does not exist when it is empty. If you say 'it is emptiness and non-emptiness', you should also know that space is not impermanent. Why is it said like that? Because it does not exist in the place of both, therefore it is said that space does not exist. Good son, some people also say this: 'Space can be created, like when there is no wood and house, is space created? Or does it become space when it is smoothed? Or covering space, climbing space, or drawing the color of space like the color of sea water, therefore it is said that space is a dharma that can be created.' As many dharmas as are created are all impermanent, like earthenware. If space is also like that, it will become impermanent. Good son, worldly people say: 'The dharma that has no obstruction to all things is space.' Is that unobstructed dharma fully present in one dharma, or is there only a part? If it is fully present in one dharma, you should know that there is no space in other places. If there is only a part, it will become a countable dharma, and you can say 'this' and 'that'. If you can count

If so, one would recognize impermanence. Some sons of good families say that space is unobstructed, but it is related to existence. Others say that space exists within things, just as fruit is placed in a container, but both of these are not true. Why is that? If it is said to be related, then there are three ways: related by different actions, like birds gathering on a tree; related by experiencing common actions, like two hands touching each other; related by being commonly related, like two fingers joined together. If it is said that different actions are related to common actions, then there are two kinds of difference: the action of things and the action of space. If the action of space is related to things, then space will not become impermanent. If the action of things is related to space, then things will not become all-pervasive. If it is not all-pervasive, then it is also impermanent. If it is said that space is permanent, unmoving by nature, but related to moving things, that is not so either. Why is that? If space is permanent,

It should not be said to be associated with ignorance. If space is impermanent like things, then it will also become impermanent. Furthermore, if it is said that space exists within things, just as fruit is placed in a container, that is not so. Why is that? If that were the case, where would space exist before there was a container? If it existed, then space would also become many forms. If it is so many, why is it said to be permanent, one, and all-pervasive? If space exists beyond the emptiness, then the existing substance should also exist beyond the space, therefore it should be recognized that space does not exist. Son of the lineage, if it is said that the place where the finger is pointed is space, then space will become an impermanent dharma. Why is that? Because the finger has four directions. If there are four directions, then space should also have four directions. All permanent dharmas are without direction, therefore because it has direction, space is impermanent. If it is so impermanent, then it is not related to the five aggregates, therefore it will become that there is no existence beyond the five aggregates. Son of the lineage, if the existing dharma exists dependent on dependent origination, then it should be recognized that that dharma is impermanent. Son of the lineage, for example, all sentient beings, trees, and forests depend on the earth and exist, because the earth itself is impermanent, so the substances that depend on the earth also gradually become impermanent. Son of the lineage, the earth depends on water, because water is impermanent, so the earth is also impermanent. Water depends on wind, because wind is impermanent, so water is also impermanent. Wind depends on space, because space is impermanent, so wind is also impermanent. If it is so impermanent, why is it said that space is permanent and all-pervasive? Because space does not exist, it is not past, future, and present. Because it is a non-existent substance like a rabbit's horn, it is not past, future, and present. Therefore, the Buddha's nature is permanent, so it does not belong to the three times. Space does not belong to the three times because it does not exist, so it is said. Son of the lineage, I am not with the world
